BOHO PROWESS

I've always felt like best outfit for a California road trip is a a baggy t-shirt or sweater, ripped jeans, boots, and turquoise jewelry. Maybe it has to do with that western rock and roll vibe. I like to feel in character while I'm on my way to a new place. Something about torn-up pants and a leather vest feels true to the vagabond spirit, especially while tearing up the highway en route through the mountains.

"Romeo & Juliet Stitched Vest" - HEAVENLY COUTURE
Ripped jeans - Pac Sun
"Fab Boots" - PINK & PEPPER / Piperlime

About Heavenly Couture -- EVERYTHING IS $16 OR LESS. A million and one people have messaged me on Ask.fm asking for affordable online shopping options and Heavenly Couture is honestly as good as it gets. The fact that a leather vest in excellent condition and quality was priced so low is beyond me and I'm not questioning it. Just kind of quietly worshiping the lovely person that sent it to me.

My Fab boots, which are *literally fab*, are from Pink & Pepper... and I think it's pretty obvious! My Pink & Pepper shoes all have a signature flair. Like they're related. Heh. You can find this pair on DSWPiperlime, or Amazon!

AEGEAN OMBRE

Paisley and ombre and snapbacks, oh my. I'm wearing one of my new favorite blouses from Bold Cupcake -- it's a sheer button-up decorated in a paisley fractal print and blue gradient. Really doesn't get better than a pattern so intricate it's mathematic. Special place in my heart for ombre, too. Reminds me of a perfect sunset. I paired the top with lavish chains, purple lipstick, and a pair of new but seemingly vintage denim shorts from Shop Gipsy Pixie. The look is lush and rustic simultaneously. About that sartorial paradox yo.

"Paisley Ocean Button Up" - Bold Cupcake
"Denim Paper Bag shorts" - Shop Gipsy Pixie

Teal socks - c/o American Apparel
Boots - Wanted

Still going strong with my tiny backpack romance... have a baby backpack you don't want? I can definitely take care of that for you. It's my goal to find a backpack so high fashion that I can wear it to the club without security questioning me like I'm trying to smuggle in five bottles of Smirnoff. Come on bud, I'm just tryna dance.

WILD AND FREE

Sporting my trusty knit crop sweater from Daily Look this lazy Sunday... but hopefully not looking too lazy in it. I paired it with my new "rainbow unicorn" print leggings from RI.by.Carrie and an oversize plaid robe wrap-around (woo, that's a mouthful). The look is country -- I'm hoping my Pink & Pepper Funky booties add the finishing Western touch.

Plaid robe wrap-around - YES STYLE

By the way, if you're the leggings type, you might want to spy on some of RI.by.Carrie's other designs. They're about more than just pants... and in fact this rainbow unicorn print comes in dress and skirt form, too! Of course, super snug and form-fitting.

SPIRIT OF THE MIND'S EYELESS

Not sure what all this new age "third eye" crap means, but I've heard a million and one people reference it in passing over the years. There's a lyric in a Slipknot song called 'Eyeless' that goes "look me in my brand new eye." I have no idea what that means either, but I'm willing to guess that it has more to do with psychosis than spiritual enlightenment and chakras. Nonetheless, I couldn't resist a sartorial mash-up between the hard shell of a metal band and the soothing nature of Eastern philosophy a la Paul Hardcastle. The result: a party city rhinestone posing as a sparkling tool for clairvoyance, a mysterious velvet robe (one that's made many an appearance here on FTBH), and, yes, Slipknot SHORTS. The genius behind band tees for ya booty is Kay from Look Killer. Check out her Facebook page for the good stuff!

FUNK AND FLORA

When I think of Gypsy Junkies, I envision their annual booth at WWD MAGIC -- a bohemian alcove of fringe and fur, rich fuchsia and mustard hues, floor-length floral prints, and jeweled head chains. This structured blazer totally caught me by surprise in their collection! I didn't expect to find tailored outerwear among the free-flow maxi gowns and loose chiffon blouses. The "Zeppelin jacket" is the best darn thing to happen to my Spring wardrobe. I layered it over a one-piece from Lulu*s and added a zany multicolor beanie for a spontaneous look... would probably wear something similar to a festival if I had the energy or income to attend one! Hope you guys have some cool outfits planned for Coachella. I'll live vicariously through your Indio experience via Instagram, of course. ;)

HOMEBODY

If someone who didn't know anything about me were to observe my life from the outside for one week, they'd assume that I'm an introvert. I don't socialize very often and spend most of my time in one room, doing anything that doesn't involve the interaction or attention with/of another person. Reading, writing, listening to music -- solo tasks, personalized thrills. But, strangely, my lifestyle isn't a reflection of my preferences. It's a reflection of my circumstances. I can't find any reason not to keep to myself, even though I would so so so much rather be out and about. What conversations are even worth having? What event is even worth the time and effort of leaving the house to attend? And what party is - well, actually, there are no parties. Maybe these are just the pitfalls of living in a city built for indulgent tourists, not artists or academics or real human beings in general. People who aren't here to shove money down the throat of a machine and sleep in a hotel. The Myers-Briggs test renders inaccurate results every time I take it to figure out my personality type, probably because it asks questions about what I'm *actually* doing instead of what I WANT to be doing. Just because I'm 'most likely' to be home alone on a Friday night doesn't mean that's my preference... it just means I wasn't invited anywhere. Whichever personality type is the one that whines the most is definitely mine. I'm neither introverted nor extroverted, I'm just "brat"!!!!!! ;~)

"Daria hi-low skirt" - GYPSY WARRIOR

Took these photos in my bedroom while the afternoon light streamed through a window. Looks very peaceful and warm here. I'm wearing another piece from Gypsy Warrior - this time it's a hi-low leopard skirt. When I first saw it, I was intimidated by how trendy it looked. It's cut in that asymmetrical shape I've seen on so many maxis these past two years. And it's printed! But it turned out to be an insanely practical piece. I pair it with all black and it becomes my statement. Tights or leggings underneath give it a more calculated, layered, almost 'brooding' vibe. It's perfect. A good look for actually leaving the house... or just lounging. All day.

FADE TO BLUE

I put this look together a loooong while ago and only recently got around to wearing it. Some of you might already be familiar with my compartmentalized outfit system where I create a hundred some piles of coordinated garments and stack them up on my 'mobile wardrobe'. Throughout the week, or month, or series of months, depending on how many outfits I've shelved, I select a look from the racks according to whichever suits my 'emotional fancy' that day. A lot of accessorizing and tweaking goes into the outfit once it's been selected, too. I feel like I still owe it to myself to personalize an already personalized ensemble since my tastes evolve daily. The more information I consume, the more my perspective changes. And with a changed perspective comes a changed palette, which is reflected through the clothes I wear, words I use, people with whom I choose to surround myself, etc. you know the rest. Some people resist change, or refuse to let the things they know influence the way they sartorially self-represent. I believe that fashion poses an unparalleled opportunity to comment on the present world, and dressing in a conservative or unchanging style is a gesture of resistance to relevant commentary. It is a manifestation of stubborn ignorance. It isn't progressive. I can't say that everyone should value progression, or even branding with progression on a material level, but if you do and want to make your value visually evident, change your look in tandem with trends. Constantly.

This look came together in November of 2012, back when I was still influenced by a mystical, monochrome vibe. But I didn't end up putting on the outfit or photographing it until a few weeks ago. I still "like" the look (I think the idea is well-executed and it's pleasant and comfortable), but I recognize that it is no longer relevant to me or my life. Instead of homages to mystic, gypsy themes, I've recently found myself drawn to hyper-futuristic aesthetics in stark white and black. But there's room for outfits in between - outfits that don't exist to prove a point, to represent the cultural climate, to do anything except look good and shallow in their draping satin grandeur. The irony is that my acceptance of "the in between" could be visually likened to a gradient. To ombre. To dip dye. To what I'm actually already wearing. So even in my attempts to celebrate 'stylistic nothingness', small details like the fading blue pattern on my tee paradoxically reference a topical attitude, thus destroying my initial assumption that the motifs mean nothing. Such is "the text". Jk. Kinda.

As you can see, being a fashion blogger is so intellectually depriving that I'm now analyzing my own completely meaningless outfits from a critical lens. Looking forward to your comments about how you love the [something material] and will I follow your blog back because you're hosting a giveaway this week please and thank you? Bitch mode is ON. And I'm confident that I can get away with this level of unbridled snark because maybe only four or five of you read the text portion of my blog. I KNOW THESE THINGS. Hi.

Beanie - 99 Cent Store
Circle scarf - c/o American Apparel
Satin robe - Secondhand
Gradient top - ROMWE
Crushed velvet leggings - TOXIC CODEINE
Conquer booties - Pink & Pepper

You might remember the last time I wore a velvet piece from Toxic Codeine - the look was "Studs To Boot" and I paired a TC bodycon mini with a cropped tank for a unique summer silhouette. If you're down for the studded goth, plaid, and leather look, Toxic Codeine might be ya steez.
