PEACH ELEPHANT

My mom and I mostly agree on all things fashion, but she can be really nit-picky about things like fabric, construction, and color scheme. I'm one of those people who thinks anyone can wear whatever color they want, and having to dress for your body type is too much work. Although I do admit that I occasionally pass on garments that make me look stout or pregnant or shapeless, for the most part, if I like it, I'll wear it. My mom is the total opposite... even if she loves an article of clothing, she won't wear it if it doesn't flatter her figure. Apparently, peach isn't my color because it washes me out, and industrial gray makes my sister's hair look 'too red.' Well ya know what, Mom. Yolo. That's what. I adore this sleeveless peach blouse no matter how yucky it makes my skin tone look in comparison. It has elephants all over it!!!! And a lace-trimmed collar! It's a tween dream come true. And I think that's pretty darn peachy.

July. Gross. Heat wave. Muggy. This typically Spring ensemble is a saccharine departure from the desert highs. I'm talkin' peach iced tea. Pop music. Pastel hair clips. Petal collars, pleated corduroy, crochet socks, tortoiseshell. Shit so cute I'm gonna have to offset the sweetness with black lipstick and biker boots tomorrow like a morning after detox. Twee detox. Tweetox. If you see that on a coffee mug three years from now, you know where it came from. Or even a measly Urban Dictionary dot com entry. If someone, somewhere decides to one day show appreciation for my clever blog commentary and market that slogan... don't forget it was MY genius! Mine! *blows nose into a tissue and weeps softly evermore*

TUNNEL VISION // GIVEAWAY

Anybody who follows me on Formspring or hangs out with me in real life knows that I am Madeline Pendleton's biggest fan. In fact, I'm typing this blog post out while wearing two foam "number one" hands, punching out every word in every sentence letter by letter. Tedious, but demonstrating diehard appreciation of my all-time favorite blogger and shop owner is at the top of my priorities (further down on the list: eating, sleeping, personal hygiene, anything that interferes with my freakish obsession and routine worship of Miss Madeline Perfect Pendleton [[saying all of this to humor whichever anonymous Formspringer asked her this question a few days ago.]])

Okay. For serious. Beyond crafting incredible outfits and blog posts, Madeline (and partner in crime Brit of Disarming Darling) channels her style savvy through selecting vintage pieces from thrift stores all over California and beyond to resell on her site TUNNEL VISION. She asked me to choose a garment from the shop to model for my blog, by way of illustrating the unbelievable stock her store offers. I naturally chose the most beautiful turquoise jacket I ever laid my eyes on. Cropped, quilted, and decorated with vivid patchwork in fuchsia, indigo, gold, and mustard, this vintage wonder is a work of art. I wore it in typical TV style -- with a turban, bindi, and Oscar De La Renta medallions.

SOLESTRUCK ON THE ROAD S/S 2012!

A couple months ago, I had the pleasure of working with the BEST online shoe retailer that the internet has ever known... Solestruck! They recently released the offical video Lookbook and catalog, featuring dozens of looks from Los Angeles to Portland and everything in between. To capture the campaign's roadtrip theme, they rented out an RV and drove all over the coast, photographing and filming models who represented the aesthetics of different cities. I was invited to rock some platform sneakers and kick the desert dust for the city I rep best: Las Vegas! Here are some screen shots of me and fellow model Emma Sargeant from the official ON THE ROAD Lookbook!

If you haven't spied 'em yet... these are the teasers and official video Lookbook!
Being a part of this project was the most incredible experience ever for me. The crew had high energy, and everyone pulled out all the stops (including a massive straw cape that made me look like a posh scarecrow!) The creative director, Ty McBride, is a genius when it comes to coordinating a shoot... he really knows how to inspire a pose with quips like "give me a snarl like 'you're not my father and I can do whatever I want!'" And I wish I could have our stylist, Anna Branch, on hire for the rest of my life. The club-inspired outfits she pulled together transcend brilliance. Rainbow shorts with leopard tights and a quilted bomber jacket... none of this is stuff I could have thought of myself! She's a lean mean stylin' machine. Our videographer, Matthew Ellis, was one of the funniest people I'd ever met. Within minutes of stepping into the RV and talking to him, I was doubled over with laughter. Nothin' better than working with people with the same sense of humor as you! He also had riveting stories about a near-death experience in Japan (and nonetheless wasn't afraid to film the models while sitting on the hood of our moving RV!) Last but not least... my main girl, Jessica Frieling, the Lookbook photographer. I met Jessica over the summer while filming a music video for my best friend Jessi's band The Ruckus. Jessica does it all - makeup, hair, photography, videography, acting, and singing. She's an artistic powerhouse and I am so unbelievably proud to say that she is not only my collaborator, but she's my friend. Everything about her is awe-inspiring; from the fact that she drove all the way from Arizona to work with our team in the desert, to the insane photos she snapped and how comfortable she made all of us feel behind the camera. Jessica is more than an artist, she's a hero. And I know that you'll be seeing so much more of her and her incredible work over the years! Thanks so much to Solestruck for this AMAZING opportunity!!!! Hope everybody loves the finished product as much as our team enjoyed creating it.

APRICOT AND ROUGE

Surprise! I'm outside. And not just hanging out somewhere boring like a suburban sidewalk or xeriscaped backyard, I'm on my college campus. Ugh, you're right. College campuses are totally boring. Who am I kidding? My school doesn't even have interesting architecture or landscaping so I posed with a more-functional-than-fashionable concrete bench. Can we not talk about this anymore? Tears are forming in my eye sockets and I don't want to ruin my mascara. On top of hating my university's blatant lack of curb appeal, I'm extremely hungry and also pretty sure there's some business major congregation going on in the cafeteria right now because a bunch of guys wearing suits channeling Patrick Bateman are walking around in front of me. And you KNOW how I feel about business majors. SO not a good day!!!!! #diva #katesanders

PETTI PEARL

Wow, hate to get all uber-relevant-pop-culture-reference on you guys, but doesn't this outfit seem kinda Lana Del Rey? Sorry. I killed it. I DESTROYED whatever dignity this angora sweater once had by comparing it to a presence that has already oversaturated every corner of the internet, my blog officially included. Now that I've apologized, I need to ask you a personal question. Do you think this collar would have looked better if accented by a flower crown? And should I have sat on a throne instead of posing with this predictable beige background in my bedroom? Yeah, y'all. This red loveseat isn't foyer furniture - it's the pride and joy of my sleeping quarters. Love it or hate it. It's still my lil precious. *kisses the velvet* LDR is probably somebody's lil precious, too. Maybe all my fans are her fans. Small world, Lana! Let's collab on floral wreaths.

A few keywords for my outfit that save me from having to explain what inspired it: lolita, cake, pearls, fuzz, angel, angel pastel schoolgirl flower child, angel hair pasta, Angel Leiberman (if you don't know who that is, GET OUT, if you do, leave a comment below and I will send you a personal message thanking you for being a wonderful human being who I want to eat a perfectly good piece of pizza Miranda with), pale, sweet, extremely soft.

ORANGE YOU GLAD?

Knock knock! Who's there? Orange! Orange who? Orange you SO RELIEVED it's finally cool enough to wear layers? Orange you excited to start breakin' out the ponchos and scarves? A few people at school accused me of being way too sensitive to moderate temperatures yesterday since I was the ONLY one with a cape. I nonchalantly whipped a scarf over my shoulder and said "it's all fashion baby," then stomped away in my wedges. That sounds a lot cooler on paper than it actually looked in real life. I carry a canvas tote AND messenger bag for my laptop most days of the week, so I'm always bogged down with stuff, my back hunched and feet struggling to balance in platforms while readjusting the enormous weight of my 8 pound computer.

This look is inspired by a street-style photo of Abbey Lee Kershaw. I especially love the shape of her aviator jacket, which falls so neatly over a scarf.

I tried to recreate the silhouette with a loose-fitting coat and tight, printed leggings. Mine are from a shop called STITCH UNION, and I'm kinda considering buying them in another color. They might be zany, but they're incredibly practical because they provide for an expansive color scheme. That, and the fact that they make people extremely happy. Everybody seemed really enthused about my legs of all things when I debuted 'em at college.

GET THE LOOK!
