UPTOWN DOWNTOWN

This was an "appointment look" I put together for a meeting downtown last weekend. Without wanting to compromise my attention to current trends, but also wanting to look sleek and subdued, I opted for a leather jumper from Daily Look and paired it with a staple Sugarlips blouse. I've seen this pairing many times before on fellow bloggers... something about the silhouette of a baggy top underneath a leather dress or overalls is irresistible to the fashion set. It has the conservative element of a schoolgirl uniform and the flair of Parisian street style. Been opting out of hats this week because I decided I L O V E the contrast of platinum blonde and dark roots. Does this count as a paradigm shift?

Since we're on the subject -- I just found out yesterday that I'll be moving to the downtown quarter of Las Vegas next month! I'm super excited about the move (even though it's only 5 minutes away from where I already live) because it means that I'll have more access to the venues and hangouts I frequent most. No more asking friends for rides back to my place! I can walk home sweet home. And I might even land a real 9 to 5 job at one of the emerging business in the arts district this fall... CAMO CASUAL

In my mind, this camouflage halter can be worn one of two ways: either as a loose top, over leggings or pants (as it's worn here), or as a some sort of cross between kilt and skirt, held up like suspenders over a top and pants with the rope tied around my neck. I've been brave enough to rock that "avant army" look only once before, but I hope to do it up again with a mesh tee, leatherette pants, and combat boots or sneaker wedges. This time, I got a bit glam with it and wore my suede heels. But a practical army jacket and beanie keep the theme casual overall.

"Berlin jacket" - CRASH & BURN
Camo halter - GYPSPY WARRIOR
"High Wait Faux Leather Leggings" - Daily Look

I've had this Crash and Burn "Berlin" jacket for at least a year and it's proved to be one of the most useful pieces of outerwear in my wardrobe, despite always seeming to escape documentation on my blog. I sadly won't be wearing it as much this summer (hello searing 110+ degree temperatures) but I'm glad I got one last outfit in before hanging it back up in the section of my closet titled "don't even THINK about it until November." Other, equally practical pieces: high-waist leatherette leggings. Most underrated garment in ALL of contemporary apparel. Faux leather leggings aren't comfortable unless you're a 90 pound waif with a flat stomach. For the rest of us: the high-waisted version! DailyLook sells them in black, rose, and burgundy for only $30. I wear mine at LEAST twice a week, so the price is justified tenfold.

FUCHSIA GLAMMIN'

Where on earth could I be going in such a swanky dress and jacket, eh? Only the best of the very best, a small Pho restaurant in Vegas' Chinatown mall, which has pretty much monopolized my recent dining outings.  I didn't realize that this dress, in all its luxurious gold and ruby patterned glory, was actually REALLY short when I ordered it off Yes Style, probably because the models on that website have no asses and therefore dresses don't ride up their backside like they do on me. No offense. But anyway, slipping into a pair of skin-tight leatherette shorts last minute solved that would-be fashion mishap in a flash. *hits cymbals*

The clear winner in this outfit's battle-of-the-separates is my fuchsia blazer with gold embroidered nautical motifs on the sleeve. How cute is it that they look like a watch and bracelet? Now that's the definition of clever. Fairground kills it every season, so I'm not surprised that they came up with this gorgeous jacket (and a matching peplum dress that I've yet to debut). In fact, I'm so obsessed with their inventory that I'm gonna have to arrange a collage of all my favorite pieces from their site to give you a true introduction. Stay tuned. Or peep their online store in advance and save yourself the anticipation. ;)

GILDED LEOPARD

Feeling a bit like a trophy in all these metallic duds: bronze shorts, shiny leopard bomber jacket, and a snapback adorned with an impressive amount of gold medallions and rhinestones. Oh yeah, and reflective sunglasses for that classic Zeva Midas touch. I'm very much inspired by all things opulent, juxtaposed with sporty or urban casual motifs. Baroque is still a popular aesthetic among streetwear enthusiasts, myself included. So choosing these literally metallic shorts from DailyLook to match the rest of my gilded wardrobe was obvious.

SHORT STOP

I don't remember exactly when I started noticing an athletic trend in high fashion, and I'm not even sure that at first I was immediately charmed. All I know is that now I'm enamored with all of its manifests - oversize jerseys, perforated material, running shoes and sweat pants, baseball caps, letterman jackets... the list is as endless as sports apparel's fashion potential. For this look, I paired an oversize Romwe jersey-inspired scoop neck sweater with metallic short-shorts (similar to the ones you'd wear working out or riding a bike) and my Persunmall pumps. I generally find that outfits flaunting a clever juxtaposition of styles - in this case, a functional aesthetic commonly associated with masculine qualities x high fashion, feminine couture motifs - are the most inspiring and innovative. I love that wearing shapeless jerseys and sexy stilettos is en vogue. Who said sportswear is just for dudes? Ladies be lookin' good!

I know, same bag and shoes as yesterday, but maybe my repetition serves as a testament to my word: when I say something's a staple piece, it's a staple piece! I sincerely use my leather clutch from Doctor Couture everyday... even when I'm not leaving the house, I'll usually have a reason to dig around its old-receipt-and-spare-change laden depths. Hm. You guys would probably get a kick out of seeing all the junk I carry with me in my bag on the daily... maybe I'll do a "what's inside my purse" installment as an incentive to clean my shit. ;)

ATOMIC

Me and the all-black look are on a roll here. It's my third day in dark duds, this time with a more avant garde silhouette instead of classic Parisian curves or trendy peplum flares. I paired an amorphous cowl-necked dress from Modekungen with the best mesh harem pants I've ever owned (sorry, chiffon capris - I love you too, but you've got competition). Since my pants seem shrouded in a shapeless gossamer aura, I decided to cinch the waist around my top to add some drama and dimension. I know people make fun of those words for being so loosely used in fashion dialogue, but I defend them sincerely: who will pay attention to a look that does not call attention to itself with depth and suspense? And how can one ever command a presence without powerful, theatrical shapes? Hate to sound too self-assured, but I think this look really does execute all of my aesthetic aims. Tension.

If your vibe is more casual, colorful, cheerful, or just plain 'street fashion', you'll be happy to hear that Romwe's end-of-season clearance sale starts today! Last till Friday and FYI... 70% off clothes that are already inexpensive is KIND OF A BIG DEAL. More deets here. <3

PRESENT TENSE

You’ve seen this jacket on me before – I literally ‘rocked’ it with a check print miniskirt and oxford lace-ups this Fall in a look called “Wild Thing.” The 1950s homage was full force with heart-print sunglasses and a fuchsia sash wound characteristically around my neck, but my penchant for nostalgic influence has since rot and festered. Outfits that look like costumes suggest more of a superficial understanding of “clothes” than of a deep and rounded understanding of “fashion.” The relationship the outfit’s aesthetic maintains with present culture is of premier importance, and in fact integral to the execution of the ensemble as an idea. So I didn’t nod to styles of any years past with this look. I buttoned the varsity jacket straight up to the neck and let the asymmetrical hem speak for itself. It’s nobody’s kitschy letterman. It’s a staple piece of present-day sportswear with an avant garde twist. Thank you, Jovonna London!

Underneath my jacket is a very clever crop top c/o How Very Dare – a clothing line that prides itself in attention to prints and modern silhouettes. Scoop necks, hi-low hems, and contemporary patterns – I see you, horse print leggings – command a presence on their site, and they all translate beautifully into real-life function. This top was an easy choice for me: the open book print is smart with a sense of humor. Didn’t even mess around with heavy necklaces because I wanted to keep the lounge vibe consistent... velvet harem pants with a low-rise, elasticized waist made that easy. And the practical heel on my new stilettos kept the silhouette sleek without compromising my comfort. Both are from Persunmall, and both are prized new staples that well represent the present tense that is 2013.
