out of the bloom

Driving through downtown LV with my mom (both photographer and chauffeur), there wasn't a specific location I had in mind to background this technicolor jester look. Until we spotted The Wall. A shade of blue that perfectly, eerily, downright paranormally matched the hues in my vinyl cap and floral bomber. The alley was deserted, just as I like it, so I was free to ham and cheese it up in my platform Timb knockoffs and chainlink hula hoop earrings. There's physically no way to 'keep it together' in an outfit like this. So if you expect me to play it cool the next we're seen in public together, remind me to specifically leave the checkered harem pants at home. Although it will be hard, as they have a mind and a mouth of their own.

ed hardly

I reeeeeally want to be truthfully able to say "overalls are my new thing," but I'm sure 'new thing' suggests 'worn more than twice.' In my heart, I am committed to overalls. Long ones. Baggy. Unflattering. Approved by a farmer. Although I only own a humble four pairs, they've somehow managed to monopolize my head space. They're the first article I look for when browsing shops online. They're tempting to wear to high brow production meetings when a fitted blazer is more appropriate. And dammit they comfortably embrace my entire body like a medium wash denim diaper. Like the onesie, they save me from having to select a top AND pants. When your top already *is* your pants, the time you'd otherwise spend inside your closet can be practically devoted to the more important things in life. Like herding cattle and farming.

But unlike my prudently dressed pastoral pals, I've got a penchant for luxury and couldn't resist glamming up. Combined with pumps and chunky Chanel earrings, my overalls leave no doubt that I'm a city slicker in disguise. But I own it. For Pete's sake I'm even wearing a rhinestone embossed Ed Hardy racing jacket.

You can thank Echo Club House (formerly Swaychic) for blessing the public with this look -- I'm holding down the fort in the Linebacker Bra, Cosby Sweater Snapback, and Gare Du Nord overalls. Check out their new site, show them some new love, support them by getting ya hands on some new goodies! At the very least, follow them on insta for 00s inspo.

knit that kinda girl

Since cutting monosodium glutamate out of my diet (well, at least before bed), fewer nightmares have interrupted my precious beauty sleep. If you didn't already know -- MSG, a popular flavor enhancer used in processed foods, is an excitotoxin that overstimulates and exhausts neuron receptors in the brain. Despite my intimate knowledge of what havoc it can wreak on the life of a sensitive binge eater like me, I have yet to swear off the terrifying little devil entirely. Nontheless I knew I had to make a drastic holistic change after one particularly heinous dream slapped the fear of God into my cheeto-inhaling, monster-imbibing self. In this hell circle of my slumbering subconscious, I accidentally traded a prized pair of knit yellow shorts for a crew neck t-shirt. I don't know how it happened or what tricks Criss Mossimo Xhilaration Angel played on me to swindle me out of such a beloved garment, especially in exchange for something so average and ghastly. All I know is that I woke up in a cold sweat and immediately sorted through each and every dresser drawer to quell my nocturnal panic. So. No more "flamin hot" flavor for me.

The good that came out of my night terror was a renewed appreciation for these shorts, which are actually one half of a sweater set from OASAP that I will debut 'in whole' eventually. It might take me a nightmare about accidentally donating the matching sweater to Goodwill before I quit taking that too for granted. ;-))) In the meantime, this Romwe knit number whets my whistle.

hex champ

Champion of all things gradient, I self-identify as Pantone and Valspar's shared MVP. Catch me at your local Sherwin Williams pocketing sample color cards with delectable pastel auras. See me at Benjamin Moore engaged in a riveting discussion with a paint specialist about which shade of eggshell contains higher elements of blue value. Hex princess. Aesthete athlete. When I drink Gatorade, I sweat high opacity acrylic drops in the exact color code of whatever flavor I consumed. Home Depot you can get really get it.

Of course Wizards of the West printed these leggings -- I'm on a roll. I'm literally going hard in the paint. Combined with this oversize jersey I picked up at Fallas Paredes, I look pretty poppin' for a walking ombre advertisement.

keithin' it real

I've always associated Keith Haring with childhood. As a toddler in the 90s, I grew up in Miami Beach when shit was really poppin' off -- entrepreneurs and artists were making their big break in a city exploding with economic growth and opportunity. My family, too, experienced that craze of success. Our neighbors had two daughters the same ages as me and my sister. So we played together everyday. Although I was young, I somehow had the capacity to deeply appreciate the incredible art on the walls of their home. Their Keith Haring prints especially stood out to me. Eventually I learned that they were originals from Keith himself, a friend and colleague of my playmates' dad! Keith provided the artwork for the nonprofit organization our neighbor founded in 1989 - and you may have heard of it: Best Buddies. Their friendship, collaboration, and activism has inspired me for a lifetime. The power of integrating art and philanthropy is incredible, and I encourage all of my readers to get to know Best Buddies -- and if you have the time, volunteer.

Best Buddies is a movement committed to establishing friendships and employment opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Socialization is a necessary element of every human life, and volunteering your friendship to someone who might not have the access or ability to foster relationships is a beautiful gift. I encourage anyone reading this to familiarize themselves with Best Buddies' state programs and integration opportunities. Be a friend. http://www.bestbuddies.org/ :)

THRASH NECTAR

Though it might officially be too cold to wear pleather shorts, the collared blouse and hoodie combo should offer enough insulation to survive this winter. And no my sweater is not some sarcastic post-Halloween joke... I'm genuinely feeling the skeleton print in an "it's ironic for me to reference Donnie Darko" kinda way. Is that still sarcastic? Whatever. Pay attention to the fact that I used the same gradient layer on every photograph instead.

GOLD SCHOOL

The fast fashion set has seen some remarkable aesthetic changes in the past couple years as designers have established a distance between their recent collections and the maximalist, retrogressive themes of seasons prior. Versace's H&M moment in 2011 presented one of the most sartorially exciting collaborations for consumers looking to brand themselves with the ostentatious kitsch of luxury for the masses. An obsession with appropriating saturated versions of other cultures' symbolic markers emerged and manifested in tropical, Polynesian prints, Greco-Roman motifs, and Japanese cherry blossoms. Excess, flamboyance, and even the subtle insinuation of entitlement to translate world cultures into playful commodities became chic in mainstream fashion circles. But by 2013, the trend tables have turned to favor austerity, futurism, and an idea of a globalized world where cultural themes cannot be appropriated because they simply do not exist. Instead of ironic baroque print bomber jackets, the fast fashion set is now scrambling to be seen in sterile silver and white or minimalist active wear. Function has finally trumped form -- perhaps not because it deserves to, but because commerce demands that new aesthetics develop and conquer in order to stimulate a subsequent trend that people feel obligated to buy into.

Well. Not me, not today. I'm gonna back track and continue to wear the flashy clothes that I have because I honestly can't afford to trade my rococo for Raf Simmons. Yes, it's cool to enter a new phase of fashion in which innovation is rewarded and efficiency is held to a higher standard than appearance alone. But it's not cool to feel "pressured" to buy membership into that movement. And it's not cool to feel excluded and ashamed because what you're wearing is representative of a conflicting (maximalist) paradigm.

I called this look "Gold School" because, besides the obvious metallic reference, my look is commemorative of a luxury hip hop theme that probably won't be considered "novel" or "innovative" anytime soon. Old school, new perspective, same aesthetic allegiances.

NEON JET SETTER

I'm baaaaack with a fluorescent vengeance! Nothing says "ready to go" like racing checks in classic Nascar style. But instead of a jacket adorned in corporate logos, I'm rocking a Givenchy inspired silk bomber from Choies to afford my look a more 'fast fashion' than 'fast track' feel. I've posted a couple photos on Instagram featuring this holographic snapback from my new favorite online shop -- 24 HRS. A million and one of my readers have asked where it's from, so I'm pretty sure this might be the most popular 'crown' in my cap collection. And the lucite heels... man. Where do I begin with these? I apologize in advance for wearing them WAY. TOO. FREQUENTLY. I swear I'm not being lazy. I'm just unhealthily obsessed.

Sooo I've been "offline" for a quite a while because I'm going through a transitional period right now and have been busy trying to establish my surroundings. I recently moved out of my old condo and have been living the vagabond life while waiting for a new apartment to open up. Last time I posted, I mentioned a loft downtown that my family and I intended to move into. It unfortunately didn't work out, but I'm optimistic. I don't think a sense of environmental uncertainty should excuse an exaggerated absence. I've got so many new posts to share with you so I'll try my best to be consistent!! Love you all.

RAINBOW LUXE

I originally planned to wear this outfit on my 20th birthday in May, but since my mom made reservations at a swanky steakhouse, I chose to sport an outfit a little less ostentatious -- a modest Givenchy shirt dress and leather pants. This ensemble is quite the opposite: unapologetically glamorous, marinated in fluorescing pastels, and accessorized with all my (hopefully) head-turning signatures.

I hope that between now and the next time I choose to wear this dress I find a pair of more functional white shoes. I used to have a pair of platform wedges that were comfortable enough to wear for long distances. But I pretty much destroyed them on a rainy night in San Francisco... it's happened with all my favorite suede shoes. These pointed pumps are just as cute but not as practical unfortunately... I don't think I could hit up a festival in heels. Definitely not ambitious enough to try it out. So I'm on the hunt for chunky white shoes. Preferably ones with a major platform. If you have any ideas, share them please!! ^-^
