DON'T FLATTER YOURSELF

Hi, did I ask for your opinion? No? Then why are you condescending to me with your unsolicited advice? Do you honestly believe that I am incapable of making my own decisions? If so, please kindly turn around kiss my ass to compensate for your disrespect, because the insinuation that I need your moral direction, as if my own won't suffice, is capital "D" Disrespectful. By the way, my aesthetic discretion -- you know, the sartorial and cosmetic choices I make for myself, for my own body, to represent myself the way my BRAIN sees fit -- is not a THREAT TO YOUR PEACE OF MIND. If I wanna draw my eyebrows on HUGE, that is my prerogative  And it is immune from your interference. No matter how many times you try to shame me with your biased rhetoric (oh you know, appeals to the Western beauty standard... as if I give a shit about what society has decided is most beautiful, as if I give a shit that constructed manifests of 'natural beauty' are valued higher than 'outrageous' [innocuous] cosmetic displays) I will *not* surrender to the idea that I should change MY makeup routine to suit YOUR cowardly preferences. The preferences that were decided for you by the media. Some of you believe that I wear makeup to seem more attractive to other people -- that's not the case. I wear makeup to exercise agency over my FACE, which I did not choose. A series of DNA and a punnet square decided my face for me, and if that's the first thing you're going to look at when you see me, I should so hope that you are actually seeing some representation of my *personhood*, not my GENE POOL. Swiping two bold brunette stripes over where my natural eyebrows would otherwise be is a rather humble exercise of my ENTITLEMENT TO CHOOSE. Don't like it? Don't look.

Think.
For.
Yourself.

Bowler cap - ROMWE
Cage collar - ROMWE
Plaid pleat skirt - 9 Crow Street
Sequin-embossed high tops - BURNETIE

On a much more positive note, I'm sporting a pair of Burnetie high-tops today! While reading the company's bio, I was stoked to found that Burnetie totes 'corporate responsibility' as a priority in their manufacturing process. And they care enough about reducing waste and protecting the environment to create sneakers out of vulcanized rubber. Gives me hope in the world. Heh. Hope that inspires anyone who's been feeling disillusioned by business lately... there are kindred souls in the industry after all. ;)

Speaking of kindred souls... HELLOOOO PETALS AND PEACOCKS. Y'all kind of really freakin' rule. "BONE ME" t-shirt? Are you for real? Waving BYE to all my other lame tank tops that think they can compete with this one. Stay clever. For everyone else: let's all make an honest effort to keep up with their wit. PEEP DA SITE

ROLLER RESORT

My obsession with tying a blouse around my waist probably dates back to an evening in December when I was wearing a matching polyester dress and legging set and needed to break up the blending turquoise graphic with some sort of... horizontal accessory. I was in LA and hadn't packed a single loose button-down, so I asked one of my dude friends if I could scour his closet for a potential saving grace of the long-sleeve dress-shirt variety. Eureka, I found a denim button-down and threw it around my waist for one extra layer. It looked grungy and spontaneous, which is just the attitude I needed for an otherwise extremely zany and thought out "aqua ensemble." For those who wonder, this was the outfit. Ever since, I've been tying a shirt around my waist for extra oomph. Also helps that I feel less awkward about how obvious and huge my butt looks in leggings. ^-^

FROM TOP TO BOTTOM:

Beanie - 99 Cent Store (the BEST)
Satin jacket - 9 CROW STREET
White blouse - ROMWE
Diamond print leggings - ROMWE
Sneakers - Jeffrey Campbell
Beach clutch - COZBEST

The satin jacket is a pastel staple -- perfect blend of street and fairytale. I got it from 9 Crow Street, the same off the charts rad vintage retailer that gave me the skirt I wore here. And maybe you remember the three collages I composed a few months ago spotlighting their styles! If you're curious, yes, their stock is still kicking ass in every department. Especially outerwear. Duh.

I'm rocking a pair of "diamond cut" leggings from Romwe (you can place an order for them here) with Jeffrey Campbell Gio Sneaker Wedges c/o my Solestruck pals. The metallic motifs in the leggings' icy print work so eerily well with the silver mesh insets that there's no way this isn't evidence that fate is legit. My beach print clutch -- which I might point out is a Tumblr wet dream for any 'pastel' and 'tropical' bloggers -- is too on point to even be real. My love and gratitude to the power of infinity goes out to Cozbest for hooking it up.

SHAKA

In December, I coordinated a full turquoise look for my debut night in LA when I attended PacSun's "Common Threads" event. It was a wild evening -- Snoop Dogg, open bar, photobooth, and a reunion with my friends Bethany, Peter, Olivia, and Adam from Lookbook. I don't even think I slept that night, opting instead for a warehouse party and eventually breakfast (delirious, and at the crack of dawn) at Fred 62. By the next morning, my suede turquoise wedges were hopelessly tarnished by pools of mud and rain through which I had apparently trudged en route from event to cab to party to cab again. So, reluctantly, I resigned those shoes to a box of other wearable keepsakes that symbolize the genesis and finality of phases in my life marked by sartorial signatures. Turquoise did me well in 2012. Initiated many friendships, undermined ones that weren't worth nurturing, and gave the internet yet another reason not to take me seriously... jokes. Not going to retire my penchant for blue in 2013. Gonna take it to other levels.

FROM TOP TO BOTTOM:
Beanie - DIY
Turquoise blouse - 9 CROW STREET
Fur coat - Secondhand
Tropical pants - OASAP
Spiked heels - BOOHOO
Bag - Rebecca Minkoff

I remember the night this cyan cap from the 99 cent store became my staple "SHAKA beanie" instead... I was looking down at its dazzling hue wondering how to make it even more ""branded."" That's when the turquoise puff paint came out. Some of you have asked "why #shaka?" and since I"m exhausted explaining THAT dated cultural prophecy, I'll just forward you to this tweet and leave things there. Mysteriously.

My vintage top is from 9 Crow Street -- still my jam for hand-picked secondhand pieces thrifted in Ireland and for sale worldwide! Ya can check out three collages I made inspired by their stock a few months ago. The floral pants are an absolute MUST (as in, you physically require them) for anyone who dares self-identify as a 'tropicunt' (me, three months ago, but you know... I still #respect). I'm wearing spiked heels from Boohoo instead of my aqua wedges in this look -- and I love them both equally. The spikes and oxford platelet give the ensemble a hard edge with uptown sophistication. It works for an outfit that's otherwise overflowing with motif excess: rhinestone bindis, gold chains, foliage print and faux fur. You can really seriously always expect me to "go there."

BREAKIN' THE LAW

This might be one of my FAVORITE ever outfits. In fact, I tweeted about it in early October: "thinkin bout never publishing photos of my fave outfit so i can keep wearing it around different ppl without anyone accusin me of A Repeat". Well, I've finally gotten around to blogging about it so I SADLY can no longer wear it... unless you guys are understanding of how much I adore it and grant me permission to repeat the look, Wish Upon A Star sabotage style. You BETTER understand that Disney Channel Original Movie reference. Or else we have absolutely nothing in common.

FROM TOP TO BOTTOM:

Beret - YES STYLE
Sunglasses - 80s Purple
Jacket - Diesel
Beavis and Butthead tee - Secondhand
Plaid skirt - 9 CROW STREET
Skechers boots - Buffalo Exchange

So, reasons why I'm bleepin' obsessed with this look: beret and lace-up work boots combo. That is NOT normal for me, and in fact the marriage of such random items was an accident. Came together as I dragged the Skechers out of my closet and into my work space, where I had thoughtlessly dropped my little hat moments earlier. Shrugged my shoulders and accepted that fate clearly wanted this pairing to happen. UNIVERSE, YOU GOT IT RIGHT. Second reason: BEST GOSH DARN PLAID SKIRT I'VE EVER OWNED. And who do I thank? None other than 9 Crow Street for hookin' it up! Maybe you remember the collages I put together a couple months ago hilighting their online vintage selection. They've since added TONS of new secondhand stock, from tie-dye dungarees to studded biker jackets fastened from authentic leather at a discount price. CHECK IT OUT *HERE*. Third reason: Beavis and Butthead. Too obvious. This tee was a gift from one of my awesome friends, always lookin' out for 90s relics that I'll appreciate (and wear the hell out of to prove it). I hacked off the sleeves so I could wear it any season with a bandeau top underneath. My sister likewise marvels at its grungy greatness. Of course Beavis and Butthead are rockin' out with the words "BREAKIN THE LAW" emblazoned across the top and bottom... if ya too cool for school, drop out.
