Renaissance Deux.

Long time, no blog. I've never in the history of FTBH gone on a hiatus that lasted as long as this one -- it's been nearly one month since I've updated! I'd apologize for leaving you hanging, but maybe I'd be flattering myself by assuming you were waiting for my return at all... heh. ;)

The truth is, I completely lost touch with my own world these past two months. My priorities as a blogger, writer, curator, and individual fell to the detriments of a "romantic narrative" in which I became unhealthily invested. I was so dazzled by somebody else's personal universe that I belittled my own into a cognitive oblivion. I stopped blogging, lulled communication with my friends to an irreparable standstill, and let my manic delusions of worth - and more often, worthlessness - erode my reality into a deprecated pulp, one that I am still working to mold back into a tenable habitat. I do not yet know harmony, but I recognize that picking back up the familiar pieces - like my blog, my photography, and my community online - is one of many cornerstones in the healing process. I want to be better.

I never really "believed" in love until recently, and even still, I am cautiously tethered to the contention that it's a socially constructed phenomenon meant to pacify people, to distract them from the perils of a mechanized, industrial world, and to reinforce the American Dream cliche. The 'feeling' that is love is dangerously real, but its assumed necessity is definitely not. I learned that the hard way.

Clearly not versed in the language of romance, I believed that the ultimate overture of love was "ego suicide.” I slowly killed off parts of myself to prove to my partner that I was willing to make any sacrifice necessary to improve our relationship because, intuitively, I knew it was doomed to fail. Yes, the nuances of healthy coping mechanisms are lost on me. But body language, vocal inflections, social behaviors and word choices are not at all – it was too easy for me to tell that there was a discrepancy in devotion therein my relationship. My error was in not having rationally done something about these impulses early on. I tolerated them all and punished myself, believing that I was at fault for my partner’s waning interest. There is nothing that I could have done about that – there is nothing anybody can do to reignite the singed wick that is an indifferent lover. But there are many ways to survive an impending heartbreak that will not weather your personhood as severely as mine have these past couple months. I was unfortunately too late to learn them before I had my own heart broken.

The unrequited love canon is not new to me. In fact, what happened in January reminds me of a pedantic line in a sonnet I wrote when I was 15: “I do fear my maieutic speak has pestered you for days / but how else will I know that length has not yet killed the spark?” Translation: I recognize that me constantly needing reaffirmation that you love me is annoying, but since we’re in a long distance relationship, I need to hear it to make sure that you’re not over me yet. Advice for anyone in a similar position, or easing into a new relationship and feeling intuitively skeptical – seriously consider the relevancy of this quote right now: “Never make someone a priority when all you are to them is an option.” If that is the case, do not lie to yourself about the reparations you feel ‘capable’ of making. Your partner has issues that they need to deal with independently of a romantic context. They may still have feelings for someone else. They may not share your passion. They may not be sexually attracted to you, emotionally attracted to you, mentally attracted to you. They may not feel attractive. Trying to solve these conflicts by throwing yourself even more earnestly into your partner’s arms will not solve anything. It is a toxic threat to your sense of self. It is suicide.

No relationship is worth figuratively killing yourself to save. In fact, my willingness to ‘choke’ may have ultimately been what drove my partner to severance – he recognized that I would die for him, and maintaining the status quo would have made him accessory my own ego murder. He wouldn’t change for me. I would. I did. One week later, I still feel grotesquely out of body. This humming vessel is not my own – it is weak, sensitive, humiliated and humiliating. It is a permanent reminder that I am something I never thought I’d become, or thought I’d have been all along… passionate. I care too much. I love fatally.

I want to say that I don’t know what it is that made my ex fall out of love with me. But I do know – it was my naïve persistence that he was ever in love with me in the first place. I loved him honestly and entirely and instantly because I am (can’t believe I’m saying this!) irrational. Yup. I am irrational. I am a manic, awestruck, saccharine sucker for love. He might be, too. But not with me, not that quickly, and not given our unfortunate circumstances. I was in love with him, and I was alone, and I sensed that solitude every time we were together. I thought that immersing myself more completely in his world, his domestic mold, his industry, and his being would serve as a noble and romantic testament to my affection. Maybe that insanity is romantic at the core… but to him, it was even more a reason to exact distance. It destroyed us. And because I became “us,” it destroyed me in the process.

Love is yin and yang. Its capacity to devastate is as powerful as its capacity to save. I could easily escape the torment of having to miss my ex, to grieve his absence, to hopelessly crave his warmth and embrace by simply “switching off.” But if I did, I’d likewise sacrifice any hope of ever again experiencing the breathless elation his courtship brought me only a few months ago. I love that sensation too much to indefinitely give up. I guess, all in all, I love love. And the greatest, truest, most romantic ever way to prove it is to survive. I will not kill myself for love. I will live for it. Faithfully every day.

Today I open a new page, start a new chapter, turn over a new leaf, and a hundred and one other foolish platitudes that are as true as tried… this is my ‘spiritual renaissance.’ Beyond survival, my excellence depends on defining myself independently of one other person. So we’ll start small. We’ll start here:

Hello everyone. It’s nice to meet you again.

BLOGGERS AND BRANDING: MAGIC Discussion at FN Platform

There’s no shortage on visual inspiration at a fashion tradeshow, but what largely goes underappreciated is the treasure trove of advice shared by experienced bloggers and style presences at discussion panels. Fortunately, I took meticulous notes at MAGIC last month for my and your learning pleasure! At FN Platform, bloggers Olivia Lopez, Rachel Schwartzmann, and Kiara Schwartz offered their audience advice about what content generates most traffic and which brands are most receptive to collaborations.

Olivia of
Lust for Life advised writers to “pay attention to what your readers value.” She noticed that photos of new shoes scored hundreds of notes on Tumblr, which meant more visits on her blog and the chance to foster a stronger relationship with viewers. Maintaining authenticity and integrity is another paradigm she stressed. “Posting content for the sake of hits will never go over well in the blogosphere.”

Rachel of The StyleLine and Le Style Child shared that her readers love seeing photos of her in her New York City neighborhood. It makes sense for her to satiate the world’s fascination with NYC and its respective culture with photos and words since so few artists are able to capture its essence candidly.

Kiara of Tobruck Ave emphasized the values a brand must share with a blogger to initiate a strong and honest partnership. “A good brand features their customers on the site and genuinely appreciates the publicity they offer through blogs and social networks,” she explained. “Reciprocation.” I couldn’t agree more with Kiara’s assessment; a brand that seems indifferent to its audience is not one that piques my interest or loyalty. I feel more inclined to support a brand that establishes a relationship with me as a person.

Goes without saying that MAGIC isn’t all business all the time… ;) Check out this awesome video the GIOGO girls put together detailing their fun at the convention! It was such a pleasure to meet them and experience their spontaneous energy in real life.

So many cool people, such a short amount of time! All I can say is SEE YOU IN FEBRUARY!

TOP 10 MAGIC DISCOVERIES

Though I instantly recognized hundreds of brand names as I entered this year's colossal exhibitor arena at MAGIC, there were hundreds more that looked unfamiliar to me. I’m curious to a fault at times, but my fascination with new and novel retailers actually led me to some incredible discoveries that I’d like to share with you guys! Here’s my ultimate Top 10 Magic Discoveries list:

10. True Fit. This awesome denim company arranged a lunch with the digital influencers to share with us their innovative new service for online shoppers. If you’re shopping for jeans online but fear that you’ll purchase an ill-fitting pair, dispel your anxiety by signing up with True Fit through Nordstrom or Macy's. They’ve generated a system that displays which styles of jeans will fit you best according to the preferences - NOT measurements - you provide! Read more about their revolutionary system here.

9. Vigoss Jeans. Okay, so I’ve ALWAYS known about Vigoss, but what I didn’t know is that their latest selection of prints and colors plays into my recent obsession with BOLD brights. Naturally, a champagne toast ensued.

8. This eyeball bag by Kreepsville 666.

7. Nathan’s chili cheese fries. SORRY I’M NOT SORRY I CAN’T NON-STOP TALK ABOUT CLOTHES. “Easily distracted by greasy, deep fried American cuisine drenched in processed yellow high-calorie goo.” – My impending OK Cupid bio. Mmmmm.

6. This fluorescent, feather print suit from Lucca Couture.

5. Marchez Vous by Yeardly Smith. Okay, it’s ONE thing to discover an awesome new shoe line. It’s another thing to discover that the awesome new shoe line is designed entirely by, um, LISA SIMPSON. Yup! The actress who voices one of the most iconic cartoon characters of our generation makes SHOES! And they’re CRAAAZY cute. Check ‘em out here!

4. Flat Outs. These are genius, obviously. Every gal has suffered the Great High Heels Dilemma: you want to go out for dinner in your sexiest stilettos. But after a couple hours of pounding the pavement, you’re due for a couple blisters. And then what? Plaster your tortured toes in band-aids and Neosporin? Or drown the pain with ten margaritas? Save yourself the hangover and invest in a pair of Flat Outs, which are adorable little flats that curl up into a TINY box and fit perfectly in your purse! So you can take a comfortable pair of shoes WITH you for a night out on the town. Get 'em here. (P.S. I have the leopard pair!)

3. These Irregular Choice heels. That I now OWN. Sometimes I question whether or not I am even deserving of such color-block perfection.

2. Gypsy Junkies. I could go on for hours about this crew – BEYOND the insane level of bohemian inspired, rock and roll groupie uniforms is an incredible team of technicolor pixies and counterculture enthusiasts. Here’s some blurbs from my “Road to Magic” post!
Today I had the pleasure of rockin' the BEST Almost Famous inspired ensemble I've ever laid my eyes (and hands!) on. Gypsy Junkies, a free-spirited brand inspired by classic rock and 1970s hippie glamour, swathed me in a gorgeous white fur coat, fuchsia tie-dye palazzo pants, and a mushroom-print ruffle blouse!
I wore the outfit to my discovery panel to share the glory that is their incredible line with buyers and consumers on the MAGIC floor. If you didn't get a chance to check out their booth at the show, find them online!  http://www.gypsyjunkies.com/

1. Chanelle, Deniz, Amber, Emily, Tiara, An, Rachel, Enocha, Emily K, Erica, Jamie,  Jenny, Joellen, Kiara, Melissa, Stephanie, Sheryl, Wendy,  and Gina – new friends, fellow bloggers, partners in crime. MAGIC ROUND UP!

This August, I had the pleasure of attending my third WWD MAGIC summer tradeshow with Two Point Oh! LA. Without a doubt, this convention experience trumped all others. Discovering new brands, communicating with retailers, and sharing your industry perspective with an interactive audience is always a thrill – but when those moments are enjoyed in the presence of friends, new and old, they sublimate into memories so powerful that it’d defy reason to forget why the fashion community is such an incredible, creative force. It was a genuine privilege to have been invited to MAGIC as a digital influencer, representing the American fashion blogging community and bestowed the impressive responsibility of generating coverage throughout a medium bloggers know best: the internet. Between meeting an inspirational lot of women as empowered as they are stylish and introducing myself in the flesh to retailers like Pink and Pepper or Lucca Couture(with whom I’d only previously connected online!), I learned. Some girls expressed their concerns with blogger-brand relationships and others offered solutions. Some girls campaigned for their favorite fashion-forward social networking sites like Pinterest and Tumblr. Some girls, like me, encouraged others to get involved in the community by starting somewhere obvious, like Lookbook.nu. No matter what the topic of discussion was, knowledge ricocheted off the walls of the Convention Center and landed deep within the crevices of our inventive brains. Anyone who argues that the fashion industry is superficial and dry has clearly never attended MAGIC. Never in my life have I been surrounded by more brilliant businessmen and women in my life than in those three days. I extend my deepest and sincerest acclaims to the Two Point Oh! LA team and WWD MAGIC staff for making this adventure possible. And I’d like to especially offer everlasting gratitude to my –and the girls’ – “blogger Mama,” Kelsi Smith, who coordinated this ENTIRE collaboration. You are all so indescribably fated to be appreciated!

In the spirit of fond memories, here’s a collage of my MAGIC experience, as documented through Instagram.

FN Platform blogger panel, MAGIC Digital Influencers blogger panel, day 3 at MAGIC wearing Funny People Co. and Tunnel Vision, me and Carmen, Caribbean Joe Hawaiian prints, me before the All Saints preview party, new Keds, feather print suit from Lucca Couture, me pole dancing in a party bus, me rockin' a 10 Dollar Tee, poolside after a long day, makeup for Day 1.

PENNY LANE: KARAMLOOP COLLAB!

Hey haters... I recently collaborated with Karmaloop to create a 70s-inspired look reminiscent of everybody's favorite rockstar roadie, Penny Lane! I wore this outfit to the blogger flea market at Space 15 Twenty this weekend in Los Angeles. The weather treated me well in my shag jacket and despite all the walking I did up and down Sunset Blvd., my feet treated me pretty well, too! A long day of buying and selling in 6-inch platforms is no small "feet." (Remind me to punch myself in the face later today as punishment for my dumb pun.) All my garments (sans jewelry and belt) can be purchased at Karmaloop! Rock on y'all.

Floppy hat - Nixon, http://www.karmaloop.com/product/The-Floppy-Sunhat-in-Brown/179794

As an admitted hat hoarder, I believe there’s no better accessory than a wide-brim hat to top off a look. This one is a perfect fit for my more free spirited ensembles. It’s just floppy enough to hide behind when I’m feeling mysterious.

Sunglasses - House of Harlow 1960, http://www.karmaloop.com/product/The-Willow-Sunglasses-in-Mustard/192093

No 70′s get-up would be complete without a pair of mustard yellow circle sunnies. These frames by House of Harlow make me feel like a bonafide rockstar groupie.

Bodysuit - Wildfox, http://www.karmaloop.com/product/175588

There are two phrases I’m shamelessly obsessed with saying: “flower power” and “passion for fashion.” Okay, maybe I’m a LITTLE ashamed by how cliche and cheesy they are. But seriously, throw those two together and BOOM! You get this cartoonish bodysuit by Wildfox. It also comes in orange, but I chose charcoal because it’s both dark and delicate.

Shag jacket - Free People, http://www.karmaloop.com/product/The-Cropped-Fur-Jacket/209477

Without a doubt, shag swag is the hottest trend of 2012. I feel like I’m wearing a pink poodle around my shoulders when I leave the house in this cropped jacket by Free People, and of course I mean that in the best way possible. Poodles are sophisticated, quite like my sweater when paired with stilletos and an LBD. Just because it’s hippie chic doesn’t mean it can’t be paired with a modern wardrobe!

Velvet flares - Free People, http://www.karmaloop.com/product/The-Burnout-Velvet-Flare-Pant/209575

Almost Famous called, they want their pants back. What would a 70′s inspired outfit be without bell bottoms? The velvet details give these bad boys some MAJOR flare. Get it? Major “flair?” My apologies – I can’t go five seconds without making a terrible pun. It’s a problem.

Platform boots - Zigi, http://www.karmaloop.com/product/194072

It wouldn’t be a disco without dancing, and it wouldn’t be dancing with sky-high kicks for doin’ the Hustle. Cue the 6-inch Zigi platforms. They’re SO large and in charge that they might actually steal all the sparkle from the disco ball. And your dad’s vintage polyester leisure suit. Can you say GROOVY? Yes, yes you can.

FATED TO BE CELEBRATED!

It totally slipped my mind that FATED TO BE HATED just had its first birthday! I started this sucker on October 11, 2010 and in 365 days time, its blossomed into my profoundest passion. In fact, I consider this blog a pet. It needs attention, affection, maintenance, a walk every once in a while, and a satisfying scratch behind the ears. In honor of its FIRST EVER anniversary, I decided to re-style an outfit I wore exactly one year ago! Coincidentally, I call this dress my "birthday frock" because it looks like the perfect floral garment for a party. If only I had a set of couture balloons and a couple velvet-textured birthday caps.

FROM TOP TO BOTTOM:
Birthday clip - DIY
Necklaces - Chanel
Dress - TRAMP, Buffalo Exchange
Scarf - Vintage
Socks - ICING
Wedges - NINE WEST espadrilles

Here's the original post for comparison! I no longer own those cork-heeled Target wedges, so I opted for my Nine West espadrilles instead. And the scarf went from an accent for my purse to an accent for my waist! The dress is still perfect without it, but I love how the magenta marries all the Spring colors in my ensemble.

I would really like to use this 'cyber-celebration' as an opportunity to thank each and every person who has taken the time to follow along with Fated To Be Hated. I put a tremendous amount of effort and energy into keeping up with this project, and hearing your incredible words of encouragement affirms that my infatuation with fashion blogging is not in vain. Blogging is one part personal reflection, and two parts understanding and appreciating your audience. This endeavor would have quickly fizzled into oblivion had I not received such supportive feedback. And then I may have named my blog Fated to be Faded (Into the Background.) But my blog isn't fading into any background at all. After a year of waking up at 7 AM, chewing my nails in the closet in search of the perfect blazer, punching keys, tucking my feet into dangerously tight pairs of secondhand doc martens, yanking the neck of my tripod into place, posing beside my antique loveseat, and arranging my point-and-shoot camera on its timed capture setting, I'm more energized than ever. I've spent 12 months "falling into" my status as a blogger, and now that I know the ropes, I'm ready to transcend every convention established. I really want to push the envelope in 2012. Thank you all so, so much for leaving comments, checking for updates, and recommending this page to your friends. Just remember - every time someone bookmarks my site, an angel gets its wings!

SEVENTEEN MAGAZINE!!!!

Hello and happy new year! I wanted to wait until 2011 officially commenced to announce that I've been featured in SEVENTEEN MAGAZINE!!!! The spread introduces 'style crushes' who blog about fashion religiously. Pick up a copy of the February Beauty Issue next time you're at the store! Leighton Meester graces the cover and I'm on page 30! The staff also sent me this DREAMY care package. I am in complete and utter bliss!!!!

3 Wildfox shirts, Oakley Sunglasses, gold bracelets, TEMPTU temporary tattoos (my favorite thing in the world), Two Faced red lipstick, Jeffrey Campbell Vienna platforms, Twiggy Seventeen cover c. 1967

To say that this is simply a dream come true would be an understatement. I've never been one to settle for just dreams- my desires manifest themselves in elaborate tales that I work to realize every second of every day. It's life-affirming to see those efforts coalesce into something as incredible as a magazine spread. And not just any spread! A spread in a magazine that I've been reading since the sixth grade. I can't say that this is the product of my work alone. I would be nowhere if it weren't for the people who read my blog and expressed interest in my words and visions. Fated to be Hated is barely three months old (I started in October) and I'm already experiencing the warmth of a growing community. Thanks for supporting me and stopping by every once in a while. There's not one individual reader that I don't appreciate immensely. Everlasting gratitude goes out to Seventeen Magazine for selecting me for this piece. Words will never begin to describe the sensation that is bubbling within me. Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you!

In celebration of 2011, here are a few photos of my New Years outfit.

Renaissance

I decided to start Fated to be Hated because I realized that my online presence requires more organization and artistic focus. My wordpress is a conglomerate of scattered ideas and projects; occasional fashion posts, interviews with street muses, photographic updates, and tell-all accounts of my social ventures. I want Fated to be Hated to be focused on one thing; style. I frequently post pictures of my ensembles to Lookbook, but I rarely explain the inspiration behind them, the theme, the purpose. I'm bored with leaving you hanging; it's time I create and expound.

I chose the title 'Fated to be Hated' because, to some extent, it defines my existence. I identify myself as a bete noire. In high school I was the outcast. Too unconventional to fit in, but too unabashedly opinionated to fade away. I never had a place. I was a social moth, not a social butterfly. I resorted to online school because it allowed to me to foster my own friendships in a realm that didn't require physical commitment. I know there are places I am now accepted, but there are twice as many where I am denied. I am fated to be hated. Someone, somewhere, will find something to criticize in me. I am contenting myself in that rejection and redirecting my attention to an audience that matters. Maybe this blog is fated to be hated, too. I'm sure that everything I do will channel negativity from some random source. But that's okay. I don't mind the hate anymore- I am drowning in my own optimism.

Everything is infinite,
