CORAL KISSER

I'm tapping into my "approachable" side (secret: weirding people out is only my part-time job) with this romantic, back-to-school look. I wore it to the campus library for a half-assed day of read critical theory texts and online shopping. Great combination, lemme tell ya. Take breaks between comprehensive critiques of capitalism by buying clothes on the internet. I think this is why people become comedians... they get so overwhelmed with the guilt of their hypocritical lifestyles that they resort to humor to alleviate the pain of awareness. UH ANYWAY, this is a simple coral and navy look that anyone can pull off! It's got a distinct, 'school daze' flair, which is what November is all about for you college-age kids. NO? Not shaving is what November is all about for you?? Try making a lifestyle out of it like my cool radfem friends, THEN call me.

I'm glad that as we phase into winter, the weather will start cooling down enough to warrant me wearing scarves again. I really love a warm accessory around the neck. Thanks, American Apparel, for keeping my winter wardrobe well-stocked with staples like this one! Now to find more navy clothes it'll match...

SCHOOLGIRL SUMMER

I’ve mentioned before that absence makes the heart grow fonder in terms of collegiate themes in fashion, but I think I’ve really outdone myself with this look. The more time I spend outside of school, the more effort I put into looking like I belong there sartorially. Need proof? This outfit. A white blouse buttoned straight up to the neck is WAY too conservative for summer, but apparently I don’t care! I can’t stop reaching for it while deliberating over outfit ideas. Might actually reach that point where my right hand is inching ever nearer to the plaid skirts and fitted blazers while my left hand is slapping at it maniacally, frenzied in its attempt to curb my schoolgirl obsession. Yes, the part of my brain that controls critical fashion decisions has gotten way too good at manipulating my body parts into doing its dirty work. Hello, superego! Could you PLEASE forward the memo that “preppy” and “summertime” do NOT mix? My id needs a gentle reminder, thanks! Don’t shoot the messenger.

Double breasted blazer – Lola Blanc’s frock swap

White blouse – Romwe (the shopping mecca for inexpensive staple items!)
Belt – Brighton
Plaid skirt – YES STYLE
Loafers – Pink & Pepper

Alas, I get to talk about my new shoes. Loafers. But not just any loafers – patent LEATHER loafers with a glossy sheen, oval toe box, and classic ruffle. Oh yeah, it’s called “The Ruffle.” That title is TOO fitting, shoe designer! And it reminds me of potato chips. I say that like it’s a bad thing, but really… any article of clothing that pays accidental homage to snack food is like, a godsend. These shoes know what’s up (crisp, high-sodium potato medallion with tasty ridges and a flavor complementary to sour cream and onion dip – see: Honey We Shrunk Ourselves.) You can browse the rest of Pink & Pepper’s shoe collection on DSW or buy a pair of these goody-two-shoes right here!

TOFFEE TWEED

Wearing another corduroy newsboy cap with a sweater dress, NO pants, and an oversized blazer. But wait. Why are blazers called 'blazers'? I know I could find out in 180 seconds or less by opening up a new tab and typing 'blazer' into wikipedia, but I think prompting a dialogue about fashion terminology is much more fun than me reading about sport coats on the computer. So I'm gonna pretend I have really limited Internet access and all websites are actually blocked from my browser except Blogger and Flickr so the only access I have to trivial information is through asking my readers in the opening paragraph of every blog post. (Feelin a lil meta today!) About the outfit - it's called "Toffee Tweed" because (duh) my color scheme is toffee and my jacket is tweed. But talking about my clothes seems kinda boring and I'm extremely hungry so naturally I only want to talk about toffee. I actually think it's really gross, but since it's a dessert, I like it by virtue of it being a dessert. I think I'll wear a Reese's Cup outfit tomorrow. Much more fitting.

FROM TOP TO BOTTOM:
Newsboy cap - 'vintage,' by principle of being in my closet for ~10 years
Blazer - Ralph Lauren
Sweater dress - YES STYLE, www.yesstyle.com
Clog heels - Qupid, www.lulus.com

Never owned a sweater dress until now! I wore this one with tights and ankle boots on the plane flight to Israel, which was something like 14 hours long. But with all the traveling by bus and eating lunch and dinner and eventually breakfast and getting acquainted with the Kibbutz we stayed in, I was actually wearing this sweater for over 48 hours. So we're really close knit. Get it? Close "knit"? Because it's a sweater?? This is my cue to walk away and chainsaw my head off.

PINKS AND PETALS

While I certainly don't cite the show as a source of inspiration, this outfit doesn't seem too far from what a Gossip Girl might wear in September. It has a scholarly vibe, one way or another, and maintains a hint of tasteful innocence with its pale pastels and girly textures. I added the detachable collar to the crop top for a fresh look that adds much needed flair to my chest. I'm an addict to accessories!

The whole concept of 'collegiate chic' is warming up to me tremendously. Now that I'm a college student, I may as well dress the part at least once a week! I'll spend the remaining six days bending the rules and starting a riot.
