HIPPIE NOIR

Though most of our surviving photographs of the hippies are faded, it's easy to tell that their clothing and color scheme were anything but. The 1960s was a vivid era, and the style closely resembled the fluorescent phantasmagoria that accompanied acid trips at Woodstock. So what am I doing in monochrome psych-rock festival gear?? I figured sucking the rainbow straight out of my psychedelia would especially draw attention to the incredible shape and texture of hippie garb. Fringe, ruffles, flares, and bell sleeves... the sartorial geometry that goes into making my silhouette a statement can be easily overwhelmed by a clash of colors. And anyway, when was the last time you saw a beatnik, hippie, and 70s rock legend fashion fusion? This is what I'm all about. Acknowledging a theme -- and transcending it.

FROM TOP TO BOTTOM:
Headscarf - Secondhand
Sunnies - Party City
Faux fur vest - ROMWE
Bell sleeve poncho blouse - YES STYLE
Velvet burnout flares - Free People, KARMALOOP
Boots - Zigi, KARMALOOP
Fringe bag - CHICWISH

As a sensible shopper, I obviously discourage impulse purchases. But I do admit that they have their perks... you have NO idea what you'll pair the garment with, so you're entertained for hours inventing a theme for it. It's weird, but I actually enjoy working with clothing that I don't like very much because it's a challenge. And forcing myself to see garments from a more innovative perspective often results in me falling madly in love them! I adore everything I'm wearing in these photos, but when I ordered a few of the pieces online (the vest and poncho blouse, for example,) I hardly knew what they'd look like in real life. So in a way, they were impulse purchases because I didn't consider their practicality at the time. But look at how well they turned out in this ensemble! Lucky me! Argh. Fine. I'm a shopping freak, and this is just me trying to rationalize my addiction.

SHERBET HIPPIE

Who’s got  two thumbs and a hankering for some pastel ice cream?? THIS GAL RIGHT HERE. Made obvious by my pink, purple, and yellow flower outfit. I’m kind of working with a hippie theme – the 70s style Wildfox leotard takes care of that – but simultaneously entering mod territory with this sleek and stripey bodycon skirt. I’ve never been a bodycon kinda girl because of my awkward figure (no waist, no hips, and a perpetually bloated stomach) but Living Royal changed my mind when they sent me this sherbet-inspired, "Colorblock Tulip" bandage skirt. I got a bit hysterical when I noticed that the color scheme of the skirt matched my Wildfox leotard FREAKISHLY WELL. The two garments are so genuinely meant to be it’s not even funny.

FROM TOP TO BOTTOM:
Crown - DIY
Sunglasses - 80s Purple
Shag jacket - Free People
Bodysuit - Wildfox
Wedges - Nine West

Color scheme serendipity aside, I’m equally stoked about this pink leather backpack from Grafea! I wear pastel colors a LOT, so choosing a hue as specific as this one for a bag actually isn’t a bad idea. It gives me more reasons to wear fun shit, like my furry Free People coat (too hot for a jacket in Vegas? BAH.) I’ve seen a bunch of other bloggers rockin’ the same sack in different shades. India Rose has it in white, Vintage Virgin has it in pink, and Kavita has it in yellow. It’s like we’re power rangers. Fashion power rangers. This needs to happen. Thanks, Grafea, for hookin’ us up with your awesome backpacks (or 'rucksacks,' as you fancy Brits say)!!!! People - if you're shopping for a back-to-school bag that's not too bulky but EXTREMELY durable and damn cute to boot, I emphatically recommend one from Grafea. Check out this photo album for some inspiration!

LADY GOODMAN

It doesn't feel like much of an exaggeration when I say that everybody's favorite movie to draw style inspiration from is Almost Famous, the 90s hit about the 70s rock n' roll roadie scene. I reference it constantly as a fixture of vintage fashions and have composed two posts in the past citing the film as a major sartorial influence. Once before, I named my ensemble (featuring this same shag jacket and floppy hat combination) after Penny Lane, the film's token blonde groupie played by Kate Hudson. This time, my look is titled after what was her character's real name: Lady Goodman.

Shag jacket - Free People, Karmaloop
Floral dress - YES STYLE
Pink socks - c/o American Apparel
Knee-high boots - PINK & PEPPER

In all honesty, traveling on the road with a bunch of rockstars seems like a terrifying enterprise... I'm a deeply emotional person who values stability, even if it means that I'm stuck somewhere boring for months at a time. I imagine that I'd lose my mind after nights of hardcore partying and noncommital hook-ups with hot but shallow band guys. Apparently that has something to do with me being a Taurus. Lack of interest in the lifestyle this aesthetic entails is no matter at all... the shoe fits and looks damn cute. I'll walk the walk on my own terms, thank you very much! Speaking of shoes, you can place an order for the pair I'm wearing here or browse other styles on DSW! Happy shoppin'.

BE MY ZEVALENTINE

Most people associate the color red with Valentine's Day since it's so bold and romantic. But since I've never really celebrated Valentine's Day with 'sensual intentions' (and also since the color red owns less than 5% of the real estate in my wardrobe) I decided to wear my favorite color today instead- baby pink! Subtle pastels are cute and cuddly, which is what V-day is ALL about in my book. Every year, my family celebrates by reminding each other how much the love in our family unit means to each of us. Boyfriends and crushes are just sweet but secondary novelties... kinda like conversation hearts! People who complain that Valentine's Day is merely an opportunity for single people to feel even worse about themselves completely forget about all the other kinds of love that exist in our world: love for friends, love for pets, love for family members, colleagues, TV shows, musicians, Reeses cups, and Sprite cans. There is so much MORE to be celebrated than romance!

FROM TOP TO BOTTOM:
Cropped shag jacket - Free People, www.karmaloop.com
Pink heart cut-out top - Justyna G, www.justynag.com (ISN'T THIS THE CUTEST TOP YOU'VE EVER SEEN?!! The girl who owns the brand custom made my shirt for me because she knows how much I love PINK! I couldn't be more delighted by her attention to detail... check out what else she has in stock. There's a heart top in practically every color!)
Belt - Vintage
Pink pants - Joe's Jeans, www.joesjeans.com
Pink patent pumps - YES STYLE, www.yesstyle.com

I love each and every one of my readers (especially the lovely bunch that leaves me comments!) and I'm so grateful to be celebrating what I like to call "Zevalentine's Day" with you guys. My version of the holiday entails finding the good in everyone and falling passionately in love with it. No exceptions. Except for people who are pure evil, AKA anyone who throws away their uneaten pizza crust without offering it to me first. Kidding! I LOVE YOU ALL!!!!! Have a warm and wonderful Zevalentine's celebration.

PENNY LANE: KARAMLOOP COLLAB!

Hey haters... I recently collaborated with Karmaloop to create a 70s-inspired look reminiscent of everybody's favorite rockstar roadie, Penny Lane! I wore this outfit to the blogger flea market at Space 15 Twenty this weekend in Los Angeles. The weather treated me well in my shag jacket and despite all the walking I did up and down Sunset Blvd., my feet treated me pretty well, too! A long day of buying and selling in 6-inch platforms is no small "feet." (Remind me to punch myself in the face later today as punishment for my dumb pun.) All my garments (sans jewelry and belt) can be purchased at Karmaloop! Rock on y'all.

Floppy hat - Nixon, http://www.karmaloop.com/product/The-Floppy-Sunhat-in-Brown/179794

As an admitted hat hoarder, I believe there’s no better accessory than a wide-brim hat to top off a look. This one is a perfect fit for my more free spirited ensembles. It’s just floppy enough to hide behind when I’m feeling mysterious.

Sunglasses - House of Harlow 1960, http://www.karmaloop.com/product/The-Willow-Sunglasses-in-Mustard/192093

No 70′s get-up would be complete without a pair of mustard yellow circle sunnies. These frames by House of Harlow make me feel like a bonafide rockstar groupie.

Bodysuit - Wildfox, http://www.karmaloop.com/product/175588

There are two phrases I’m shamelessly obsessed with saying: “flower power” and “passion for fashion.” Okay, maybe I’m a LITTLE ashamed by how cliche and cheesy they are. But seriously, throw those two together and BOOM! You get this cartoonish bodysuit by Wildfox. It also comes in orange, but I chose charcoal because it’s both dark and delicate.

Shag jacket - Free People, http://www.karmaloop.com/product/The-Cropped-Fur-Jacket/209477

Without a doubt, shag swag is the hottest trend of 2012. I feel like I’m wearing a pink poodle around my shoulders when I leave the house in this cropped jacket by Free People, and of course I mean that in the best way possible. Poodles are sophisticated, quite like my sweater when paired with stilletos and an LBD. Just because it’s hippie chic doesn’t mean it can’t be paired with a modern wardrobe!

Velvet flares - Free People, http://www.karmaloop.com/product/The-Burnout-Velvet-Flare-Pant/209575

Almost Famous called, they want their pants back. What would a 70′s inspired outfit be without bell bottoms? The velvet details give these bad boys some MAJOR flare. Get it? Major “flair?” My apologies – I can’t go five seconds without making a terrible pun. It’s a problem.

Platform boots - Zigi, http://www.karmaloop.com/product/194072

It wouldn’t be a disco without dancing, and it wouldn’t be dancing with sky-high kicks for doin’ the Hustle. Cue the 6-inch Zigi platforms. They’re SO large and in charge that they might actually steal all the sparkle from the disco ball. And your dad’s vintage polyester leisure suit. Can you say GROOVY? Yes, yes you can.
