peachy queen

Can we take a moment to appreciate the color coordination happening here? See, color coordination isn't a 'thing.' It's an event, and we're watching it 'be' in these still photographs. Peach stairs, peach petal print. Ivory banister, ivory blouse. Autumnal mustard and dusty rose accenting floral details in these peony patterned leggings from Redbubble. I've decided today that I want to spend the rest of my life playing with clothes in large piles, ideally in a warehouse loft with enormous windows through which the smell of perfume and incense does not escape. Oh. How I long for a sprawling room lined with mannequins awaiting their adornment.

For those who aren't familiar -- Redbubble is an e-commerce marketplace that offers visual artists the opportunity to sell their work either as is or on products like pillows, t-shirts, iPhone cases, mugs, and more. Peep the selection, but be warned... it's huge!!

For a more apparel-centric shopping experience, explore Lalalilo, the retailer behind this cute crochet blouse. I found a heavenly selection of beach clothes in their inventory, including this resort-style dress I'll debut later. <3

for crying out loud

I feel like I might be the only blogger who discusses her struggles with finding an outfit photographer to call on consistently. My sister is usually the eye behind the lens, but since school has started again she's been too busy to snap my pic in the courtyard. So I've resorted to the unthinkable: asking my mom. She's a couple generations behind but so far peering into my SLR and pressing a button hasn't been too burdensome. She even took all these pics of me vogueing in palazzo pants! And I love how they turned out. It's never too late to learn the ropes -- any ropes.

Anyway. This ensemble is what I wear when I ceremoniously cry for the haters. Keeps me grounded. Although you could say my third eye chakra is a touch overactive...

HOLIDAY IN THE SUN

If you follow me on Twitter (so sad that this is even a CIRCUMSTANTIAL scenario - if you're reading this, that means you have an Internet connection, and if you have an Internet connection, that means you should have a Twitter, and if you have a Twitter THAT MEANS YOU SHOULD FOLLOW ME??) you ALREADY know that I'm a Mary Kate and Ashley enthusiast. I believe in everything MK and Ash represent: creating an empire out of the novelty that is your youth and selling out to the Big Boys. In my humble opinion, HOLIDAY IN THE SUN is the magnum opus of the Olsen twins' film career. We're talking about a movie that stars two babes in tinted, wire-rimmed glasses hanging out at the ATLANTIS RESORT™ for 87 minutes. Better yet, Weezer's on the soundtrack and Megan Fox plays a character named "Brianna Wallace," first class brunette bitch with a 'tude so fierce it even knocks me off my impossibly high horse. "Messages please?" she spits, with her signature sexy sass. I know she and the twins are pitted against one another as they duel it out for irresistibly surf chic JORDAN (Brianna knows what she wants and it's him,) but I'm the kind of film connoisseur who roots for every character, as long as they have an awesome sense of style. And I'll be the first to tell ya... protagonists and antagonists alike, the fashion in this tropical work of avant cinema is IMPECCABLE. So superb that I designed an outfit inspired by the VHS cover.

Sooooo... The Baroque Jacket. The pattern is very 2012, but opulent gold motifs are still in service so definitely worth the debut. ~ Thanks SHOP AKIRA for keeping my look "a look."

The BITNB top has been waiting for a cameo since I was 19 or something... oh the distant glow of youth. Has a similar aura to the yellow > orange > brown gradient.

MOTO SHERBET

I found this leather jacket decorated in gorgeous pink and orange panels at Etro. It's one of my mom's favorite designers and I can see why... quality Italian textiles and vivid paisley prints. I paired the jacket with ivory leather skinnies from Daily Look and Ralph Lauren pumps to match. The look is modest and urban, but with the flirty spirit of Spring.

I'm normally in the habit of posting everyday, but these past few weeks have been a bit difficult for me! I've certainly had the time to blog, but not the 'emotional means' I guess. Waiting patiently for some internal improvement so I can back into my usual groove... thanks for your support, y'all! <3

VAGABOND

Those of you who've been reading this blog for a while know that I have a "thing" with road trips... specifically ones in which I drive out to Los Angeles. No, I don't have a license so I'm never actually the one behind the wheel, and while not being able to plan my own exodus on my own terms is inconvenient, getting to put my feet up on the dash in the passenger's seat of someone else's car makes up for it tenfold. I haven't traveled in a while because my (not so) recent breakup 1) spurned an irrational intimidation of LA (and of everything in general, I now realize... heartbreak is unnecessarily humbling) and 2) sent me careening into aforementioned "quarter life crisis" in which I am essentially too crippled by perennial cliches (WHO AM I?!?!) to satisfy my sequestered wanderlust. Every day I wake up and wonder "is it over yet?" -- can I go back to being my comfortable, collected self? My sister says that you can't force personal harmony. You'll know that you're 'healed' when you feel your proverbial chakras align. Neither of us really buys into the 'new age anatomy' idea, but it doesn't matter -- something within really does 'click into place' after enough time has passed. And it is my understanding of (stupid, idiot) love that nobody gets to decide how much time that is.

I'm hoping that sporting a look that reminds me of traveling West will get me back in the vagabond groove. You learn so much more about yourself when you're on the road, in between two cities, meditative with your forehead pressed against the window glass. No time at 70 miles an hour to concentrate on the canyons and cacti that pass you by, and too much solar glare through the dash to see the horizon in focus. You're stuck in your own head, but you're in motion. Having a novel destination means that something 'important' by virtue of being unexpected will happen whether you anticipate it or not. That confidence, that trust in the literally illuminated unknown, is the most incredible sensation in the world. It is an unspoken flavor that will save my life. I'll always have the road, even if I have no one waiting for me at the other end.

Many thanks to Funny People. Co (the makers of my beloved turquoise headchain) and Vanessa Mooney who understand the need for jewelry to compliment a look to compliment a Mach 1 Mustang to compliment a restless lifestyle. Not sure where the idea to pair a headchain with a wide-brim hat came from, but it came, and I acted on it instantly. Praying that I'll have a chance to debut the couple - and maybe even a similar leopard and leatherette fringe ensemble - on a trip West sometime this spring.

I've written about my love affair with travel before... In Love With Dusk.

Still my favorite photo of a random LA sunset in a random LA Walgreens parking lot.

DON'T TRY

...to make any sense out of this outfit. It's uptown and downtown and clementine-orange-slash-Swiffer-green. Actually, the blazer reminds me more of the loading cursor on Windows 7. Serene aquamarine green. Sadly the sunset toned leggings and macaroni yellow beanie are not so serene. And the very bougie quilted Marc Jacobs bag is a random addition that I can't justify. It matched one patch of my pants? It's a neutral color? The gold straps tied in well with my metallic chains? That's about the best I can do... I'm going back to sleep now.

Y'all definitely need to check out O-mighty's wardrobe game... it's better than any other online retailer's inventory because the alternative theme is consistent within every garment they stock. From blouses to circle skirts to overalls and vintage dresses, every single item is grunge perfection. *Bows down*

STREET AND SOUR

This outfit might be the best representation ever of my winter 2012 look. Loose, black pants or sweats, lace-up boots, gold chains, beanie, and reflective sunglasses. I threw this on hoping I'd channel that urban street style vibe. Feels good to dress in clothes as comfortable as they are hip, especially after days of designer coats and handbags so posh-stentatious passersby assume you're a flaming bourgeois capitalist even though behind the interlocking C's is a very confused 19 year old who doesn't believe in privatization. There's a word for that life: Neiman Marxism. Anyway, so this outfit is more than an outfit for me. It's a breath of freakin' fresh air. That little "LOL" pin on my beanie is a tiny reminder not to take myself seriously every time I catch a glance of it in the reflective surface of my iTouch. Hehe LOL it's already working.

FROM TOP TO BOTTOM:

Beanie - H&M
Sunglasses - 80s Purple
Sleeveless blouse - ROMWE
Belt - Vintage

Snakeskin messenger - Marc Fisher

A few things: just because it's winter doesn't mean you need to stop hoarding sleeveless blouses. I have millions and it's A-OKAY because thankfully fashion designers make these things called "jackets" that you can layer over garments to keep yourself from freezing. I've experimented with them and can testify that they DO prevent frostbite.  Another thing: these pants. I know I've already introduced you to 'em in my Retro Luxe post, but uh, I don't think I said ENOUGH about how grossly perfect they are. Cottony, baggy, soft. They look great, feel better, and make getting dressed on lazy days infinitely EASIER. I'm almost positive that if everyone in the world bought a pair and wore them daily, we wouldn't have wars because we'd be too happy and comfortable to get mad at each other over God and country. REAL TALK.

OH YEAH, and my Marc Fisher messenger bag. It's bleepin' HUGE!!!! I can fit EVERYTHING in this giant pouch... a composition notebook, all my makeup, wallet, two Monster energy drinks, and my gym shoes. WIN WIN WIN WIN WIN.

Other cool news: Goodnight Macaroon is offering up to 50% off all stock from now until December 9th! You'll be seeing some of their goodies on FTBH in the near future. Goodies of the futuristic floral variety. ;)

BUT WAIT I SAVED THE BEST NEWS FOR LAST... I'M COMING TO LA TODAY. In fact I'm hitting the road in a couple hours. My favorite part of the trip is for the sure the skylight in the third stall of the upstairs women's bathroom next to the ice cream parlor at the Barstow Station public rest stop.  HOLLER AT YER GIRL IF U WANT TO EAT HELLA LITTLE CAESAR'S PIZZA WITH ME N MY BUDS :-)))))
And if you see someone wearing full turquoise while walking down the street with a suitcase, it's me. It's always me.

HAPPY GO LUSH

Today's look is actually from summertime, which explains my bare arms, legs, and chipper disposition! I guess I lose a little bit of that lust for life as the days grow shorter and nights nippier. When it's cold and dark, there's fewer opportunities to get out and travel. You gotta attend to the chilly weather with more clothes and schedule your day to get everything done while it's still light out. So there's not as much time to relax, and on top of that, the biting air makes outdoor fun near impossible. I'm sure plenty of people look forward to winter for the holidays and hot beverages, but as I celebrate neither, I'm outta luck! My glory days rest between May and August. Long days, hot breezes, all the time in the world to hit the road... untethered to any obligation at all.

FROM TOP TO BOTTOM:
Glasses - Flea market
Medallion necklace - Oscar De La Renta
Faux fur vest - CHICWISH
Baroque print dress - ROMWE
Wedges - Jeffrey Campbell

I found this baroque-print, retro style dress on Romwe. Elaborate gold patterns have made a huge resurgence all over the blogosphere, and I'm especially happy to see them in the inventory of retailers I frequent most, like Akira, Lulus, and 80s Purple. That vivid, vintage Versace look is what I'm ALL about, no matter how trendy and fast fashion it seems at the moment. It's an aesthetic with a sense of humor. Exaggerated opulence. Sartorial sarcasm. This dress is only a subtle nod to said theme, but let it be known that it is only a teaser to the ornamental gold details I'll be sporting in the coming season. ;)
