BAROQUETTE

I had this idea about using my daily horoscope to guide my thought process while writing a post that describes my #ootd. I know a lot of my readers don't take astrology seriously, and to be perfectly real... even I'm not sure that I can entirely vest my trust in an unverifiable science. But assigning a cosmic narrative to my day's events makes life 1) more interesting and 2) more organized. Seriously. Think about astrology as a mystical system that compartmentalizes people and then structures their calendars with predictions and guidance. This makes survival SO much easier to process. So, even if it does seem foolish as an objective measurement, at least it does a service to the psyche.

About clothes: not sure what inspired me to pair a "fiercely baroque" sweatshirt with transparent camo pants, but that's what came out of my brain and I obviously didn't fight the urge. Both 'camo print' and 'rococo gold' seem like tried 2012 tropes so correct me for walking around like a bag of chips in 2014 when I'm clearly repping the wrong year and ruining my own reputation. Breaking news: I do actually care what other people think and my self-esteem is severely contingent on whatever those thoughts are.

HOLIDAY IN THE SUN

If you follow me on Twitter (so sad that this is even a CIRCUMSTANTIAL scenario - if you're reading this, that means you have an Internet connection, and if you have an Internet connection, that means you should have a Twitter, and if you have a Twitter THAT MEANS YOU SHOULD FOLLOW ME??) you ALREADY know that I'm a Mary Kate and Ashley enthusiast. I believe in everything MK and Ash represent: creating an empire out of the novelty that is your youth and selling out to the Big Boys. In my humble opinion, HOLIDAY IN THE SUN is the magnum opus of the Olsen twins' film career. We're talking about a movie that stars two babes in tinted, wire-rimmed glasses hanging out at the ATLANTIS RESORT™ for 87 minutes. Better yet, Weezer's on the soundtrack and Megan Fox plays a character named "Brianna Wallace," first class brunette bitch with a 'tude so fierce it even knocks me off my impossibly high horse. "Messages please?" she spits, with her signature sexy sass. I know she and the twins are pitted against one another as they duel it out for irresistibly surf chic JORDAN (Brianna knows what she wants and it's him,) but I'm the kind of film connoisseur who roots for every character, as long as they have an awesome sense of style. And I'll be the first to tell ya... protagonists and antagonists alike, the fashion in this tropical work of avant cinema is IMPECCABLE. So superb that I designed an outfit inspired by the VHS cover.

Palm tree top - BLOOD IS THE NEW BLACK
PU Leather shorts - OASAP

Sooooo... The Baroque Jacket. The pattern is very 2012, but opulent gold motifs are still in service so definitely worth the debut. ~ Thanks SHOP AKIRA for keeping my look "a look."

The BITNB top has been waiting for a cameo since I was 19 or something... oh the distant glow of youth. Has a similar aura to the yellow > orange > brown gradient.

HALO RANCH

I haven't worn anything particularly Western inspired lately, so this look was especially fun to put together since it tapped into a more or less dormant region of my sartorial repertoire. I LOVE manipulating old standby themes to reflect more recent trends -- the small details like gold chains and a baroque patterned blouse elevated this look from "desert rock" to "desert luxe." The dress, which seems like a simple white gown in the front, actually features a brushed gold chain arrangement in the back. It's appropriately titled the "Pyramid Chain Dress" and looks damn good even when it isn't paired with a *colossal* floppy hat and costume jewels. Thank you, Bold Cupcake!

FROM TOP TO BOTTOM:
Hat - Zara
Boots - Buffalo Exchange

I put together a small mood board of photos that inspired this outfit's "vibe." There's a baroque and Renaissance element, halo motifs, but mostly a Californian desert aura suspended in a lens flare...

DIAMANTE VELVET

Coming at ya today with a casual cropped knit and rhinestone velvet look! I haven't broken out this bowler hat in actual MONTHS so it almost feels like a completely new accessory for me to play with. Went big with the sunglasses and Oscar de la Renta necklace, but toned it down in every other department. Matching beige sweater and Ralph Lauren pumps are all I need to do those diamante short-shorts baroque justice. You might have noticed that I also own this sweater in gray (featured in Cemented) -- both are staple pieces I picked up from Daily Look! The gold embroidered totem shorts are from Ecugo, a retailer like Romwe and Choies that I recently started working with. Can't wait to show you another vintage ensemble. <3

ON THE PROWL

It's kind of gross how unapologetically "diva" this outfit is. The Carrie Bradshaw curls and beret, oversized sunglasses, and baroque satin, leopard print, and fuchsia suede triple threat are almost too much. No, actually, this print crazy hodgepodge is genuinely "too much". Fortunately we here at FTBH Corp. don't respect socially constructed fashion boundaries and take much pleasure out of crossing lines conventional style referees label off limits. And we do it in literal stride - one platform pump in front of the other. "We" being me, myself, and I, of course. Even fiercely independent girls need a posse!

:

Cap - An old standby
Oversize cat-eye sunglasses - RETRO CITY
Vintage satin jacket - TUNNEL VISION
"Leopard leisure suit" - NATURAL COLOUR
Fuchsia pumps - Pink & Pepper
Bag - Rebecca Minkoff

Only four people deserve my love today. Brit and Madeline, the rock n' roll amazons behind Tunnel Vision, and "Pink" and "Pepper", the BFF cartoon chicks who represent the shoe company they're named after. Even though they're only illustrations (don't discriminate - even drawings can dress top-notch) they're somehow WAY more stylish than me in all their two-dimensional glory. I'm thanking the boos behind these brands (or 'vintage stockists' in the case of Tunnel Vision) because not only did they hook me up with some sweet Spring goodies, they pretty much do the entire world a service by offering such rad merch.

SUGARLIPS DAY 1: BAROQUE NO JOKE

EXCITING NEWS! I'll be dedicating the next five days on FTBH to an online retailer with whom I've been collaborating regularly since January of this year: Sugarlips! You've seen their garments on me before - a spicy red dress in the early winter, an indigo romper in Spring, and a fiery paisley gown to celebrate midsummer a couple months ago. Sugarlips is always overflowing with statement gowns (like this snakeskin skater dress) and mix-n-matchables (like this Burtonesque striped blouse). Oh, wait, I just realized that I can actually refer you to a special Sugarlips page that features ALL my favorite selections from their stock! Mmm, efficiency. Look out for my ensembles - one a day till Friday, my friends - showcasing Sugarlips from the sartorial perspective of ~yours truly~. Today? BAROQUE LIKE IT AIN'T NO JOKE.

Spiked hat - OASAP
Sunglasses - 80s Purple
Top - "SCOTS REGAL BLOUSE"
Backpack - Yes Style
Trousers - Yes Style
Sneakers - Jeffrey Campbell, SOLESTRUCK

This look is especially representative of my recent style metamorphosis. I'm kinda over the whole frilly-pastel-babydoll aesthetic, so don't expect to see me in mary janes and a petticoat any time soon...vI'm also trying to distance myself slowly but surely from my once signature blazer-and-heels combo. I feel like it's, in the words of my sister, 'disingenuous' to superficially conform to a bourgeois style standard. Sorry Mom, but the country club thing doesn't inspire me these days! Team silk bomber jacket. I've undergone so much personal discovery and identity reformation within the past couple months, and I subsequently want my style choices to reflect that. Sneakers, cotton slacks, and a loose tee or blouse are my December stand-bys. (This is the part where y'all say "sick alliteration, Beebs!" Yes, you can call me 'Beebs.' WE'RE FINALLY AT THAT LEVEL.) I love you all and am everlastingly grateful for your loyalty and attention. I hope that I may resume the privilege that is engaging in a symbiotic exchange of inspiration within the blogosphere! Mucho love, infinite thanks.

YA GIRL,
BBZV
