NIGHT FLOWER

When I was asked to style a garment from UK brand Fairground's "Hollywood High" collection, my immediate thoughts were "how will I ever narrow down my selections to just one piece??" The stress and impending doom of having to make such an impossible choice were only alleviated by the sight of the Night Flower jumpsuit -- a black, pink, and green one-piece decorated in floral print and accented by a peek-a-boo-back feature. It was then that I knew the precious garment had to be mine, not only to soothe my fragile nerves, but to swathe me in Spring luxury... the kind only promised by loose rayon, fuchsia florets, and  turquoise petals. And mine it was. I paired it with a black satin kimono, floppy hat, and wood-soled wedges for a demure garden look with flirtatious spirit.

Doll

It was obviously too hot to wear this outfit in the daytime (hello, 110 degree average!) so I reserved it for a dinner outing at nighttime instead. It's been a while since I've revisited babydoll themes, especially ones entailing hair bows and mary janes! Summer lends itself to barbecues, camping excursions, music festivals and block parties -- all events that are best enjoyed in a pair of cut-offs and platform sandals. And as a consequence, I've shied away from peter pan collars and conservative blazers. But you know me... every time I recognize that I'm neglecting a theme, I get the itch to immerse myself in it all over again!

Bow - Laura Ashley
Blazer - Ralph Lauren

So weird how I go from wearing paisley bandanas and Hawaiian t-shirts to THIS.

TANGERINE HIPPIE

June literally feels best while wearing fringe. Okay, TOTAL lie, and now I've become one of those people who slaughters the word 'literally' in their attempt to emphasize how right they are. To be fair, June in Las Vegas feels like one of Dante's inferno hell circles -- extremely hot, dry, overpopulated with annoying people, and nothing to drink unless you have $8 to spend on an overpriced water bottle. That's like hell, right? You can pay your way out of torture? What I really meant by June feeling best in fringe is that a little bohemian flair goes a LONG way in the summer months. Do nothing and you're still a champion because loose threads are artfully hanging from your hemline. It feels complete... absent of limits, free, mystic. I've worn this paisley kimono at least a dozen times between Vegas, LA, and Orange County. Literally *proper use noted* 'between' all those cities -- loose-fitting fringe wear is my road trip uniform so I'm always down to throw a kimono over my shoulders before a long car ride.

FROM TOP TO BOTTOM:
Headband - Vintage (it counts as vintage if I've owned it since the 5th grade, right??)
Sunglasses - THE COBRASHOP
Paisley kimono - Billabong, PACSUN
Tangerine dress - Lola Blanc's frock swap
Racer boots - PINK & PEPPER

I'm trying to stop myself from gushing all CRAZY on you guys about these boots, but they're the first pair of knee-high racer/riding boots I've owned that I genuinely adore at every angle. The zipper in the back is accented with tribal print and the sides are adorned with equestrian buckle straps. Everything I could ever want in a shoe is here -- practicality (GREAT for walking,) longevity (sturdy heel,) matchability (not a word but should be.) These kickers look amazing with outfits of ALL themes, and that's not just because they make my thighs look divine. They're genuinely flexible. Of course, they're a product of Pink & Pepper, new favorite shoe brand that will be making MANY more appearances on FTBH these next couple months. Check out the rest of their selection on DSW or place an order for the boots I'm wearing right here!

HEARTS ON FIRE

I oughta have a halo above my head and wings out the back since this shirt is so holy. Ha ha! Slappin' my knee so hard it might bruise. No, I'm not wearing a bra with this look which, yes, means I'm running the risk of exposing my lady parts to passersby. A little side boob doesn't freak me out. In fact, neither does full frontal. Exhibitionism is not a character flaw, it's a tenant of strength, self-confidence, and awareness. The apple of knowledge or whatever you people call it can SHOVE IT because I'm not embarrassed. Workin' my shit. Rockin' my thang. #BASED

FROM TOP TO BOTTOM:
Floppy hat - Nixon, Karmaloop
Sunnies - ROMWE
Holy heart top - NATIVE HEART
Shorts - Levi's
Boots - Zigi, Karmaloop
Bag - Rebecca Minkoff

What do I call this theme of denim and floppy hats? Western? California coast chic? It seems like such a common style that it doesn't need a name. Just something fun to wear while you're, I don't know, posing next to a cactus for a roadside disposable camera pic. Always immortalize your road trips with film. General rule. Reminds me of an interview I did with Dark Vice in which I cited the following as style inspirations: Faded photos of friends getting drunk in the desert, someone I don’t know’s Road Trip 2009 facebook album, headshots in high school yearbooks from 1999, youtube videos of parties recorded on fuzzy camera phones, flash photos of a backyard in Hollywood Hills at night time, candid picture of two people snorting cocaine in a posh nightclub, a girl sitting on the curb at sunset, eating a cheeseburger with her sunglasses on.

All that shit translates to this outfit. Peace.
