1993

LAST POST OF 2012 SO WHAT BETTER WAY TO HONOR THE OCCASION THAN WITH AN OUTFIT HOMAGE TO THE DECADE IN WHICH I WAS BORN?!?! I'm repping '93 and the golden age of grunge. Surely the concept of a superficial fashion post about the aesthetic elements of an anti-corporate movement comes across as irritating and ironic to 90s OG's, but since I'm already pretty progressive, I think I can get away with this one. ;-) I went with the most classic vintage (or vintage look-a-like) pieces in my wardrobe to capture the essence of a generation that survived on garage rock and microwaveable burritos. My greatest accessory: a sticker-coated Walkman and Pavement cassette in tow.

FROM TOP TO BOTTOM:

Sunglasses - Buffalo Exchange
Tattoo choker - Cobrashop
Guitar pick necklace - Gift from my friend Leigh Alexander, my #1 90s style advisor
Cargo aviator coat - Chicwish
Calvin Klein crop top - Vintage from Shoppalu
Plaid shirt - Ralph Lauren
Denim circle skirt - Chicwish
Skechers boots - Buffalo Exchange

There's a million and one other sartorial ways to do the 90s justice. Crew neck sweaters with a single navy stripe across the chest, paired with Dr. Martens and light-wash boot cut jeans. Middle-parted brown bowl cuts for the dudes, pixie 'dos with maroon lipstick for the chicks. Inspiration is endless. What's even crazier is that the next generation will look back at us, pioneers of fashion in our own respect, and admire the styles we take for granted in 2012. Here's to 2013 -- savor every trend, relish your youth, adore the present like it's a page out of tomorrow's cherished history textbook (or nostalgic Tumblr reblog in the future of URL). Doesn't always feel like it when it's happening, but maybe your golden age is right now. So respect the shit out of it. It's a concept as obvious as it is underappreciated... so make a change and take advantage! You never know.

SHOES WOULDN'T. SNEAKERS DEFINITELY WOULD.

Can I get a WHAAAAT WHAAAAAT for the new Converse campaign?? I'm loving how they've re-branded Converse sneakers to appeal to the party hardy generation. Sneakers no longer must be relegated to the boring and banal: exercise, errands, outdoor activity. With Converse, they've been liberated from the shackles of labels like 'practical' and 'comfy.' Sure, Converse are both of those things. But they're so much MORE, and the new campaign underscores their hip versatility with catch phrases like "shoes buy art, sneakers create it." Now that's what I'm talkin' bout! I'm no sucker for propaganda, but I can totally get behind a movement that calls for sneakers as signature foot gear for artists, innovators, and kids who let out battle cries like "YOLO" before jumping off the roof of their house and into a pool at midnight. A million thanks to Converse and Lookbook.nu for arranging this collaboration! I'm an avid fan of a classic shoe and love the ways in which Converse has chosen to represent itself this season. GET CRAZY.

Sunglasses - Foster Grant
Flag print top - OASAP
Light wash jacket - GUESS?
Flannel button-down - A&F
Lace-up navy shorts - SHOPPALU
HIGH TOPS THAT KICK ASS - CONVERSE

This outfit is perfect for a pair of high-top Converse because it's consistent with the Americana aesthetic. Kicks look good on anyone with anything, but a flag print top and flannel button-down feel especially fitting. I wore this ensemble out for a long (and spontaneous) day of random shopping about town with my sis. That's what Converse are all about -- endurance and recklessness. The best decisions ever made are on whim. And what better way to wing it than with sneakers?

I got my first pair of Converse high-tops for my 16th birthday after seeing them on trendy it-girls of the era, like Cory Kennedy and Agyness Deyn. My life drastically changed soon after - maybe not as a direct result of owning the chucks I'd pined after for the months leading up to my birthday, but definitely while they were on my feet (or at least in my closet). No longer was I reserved and insecure; in the summer of 2009, I underwent my first of many adolescent metamorphoses. I was ambitious. Feeling more like the idols I admired through the lens of internet famous party photographers, I chased after my dream lifestyle. I was as silly as any 16 year old with aspirations of the "alternative" variety... I wanted a feature in Nylon magazine, a Wikipedia article, a fanbase, anything to validate my existence and affirm that my attempts to *be* as cool as I felt inside and looked outside were not in vain. I was your average teenage girl with too much curiosity and not enough reservation, humility, rationale. But maybe I didn't need it. Maybe had I fostered more mature goals for myself, I never would have become the person I am today. And it's crazy to think that a pair of shoes gave me the initial confidence boost I needed to spark the chase. Converse isn't kidding... shoes wouldn't. Sneakers definitely would.

MY SPIRIT IS PAISLEY

What's that about you being able to see my aura? Wait, really?? It's not a color, it's a pattern? What kind of pattern is it? Checkerboard, houndstooth, polka dot, aztec?? No? It's paisley, you say? Oh my god I KNEW IT, I totally called it. My spirit is so paisley it's not even funny. Perhaps I'm the only one with a print surrounding my spirit. This hippie inspired ensemble is an homage to my earthy glow, my western flair, my oneness with the desert landscape. Fractal fabrics, yes please! Compliments to Shoppalu for picking out this incredible vintage maxi for me. Their entire site is dedicated to hand-selected secondhand garments. Maybe they should rename their store "HEAVEN.COM" Kinda wish I was kidding.

This was a pretty amazing outfit for a breezy Monday (which I famously spend by hanging out on my college campus for 11 hours straight.) It's not so bad since my school is in walking distance of a silk flower supply store (that's a nifty euphemism for DOLLAR STREET) so stocking up on the goods for my floral crown collection has become a weekly tradition. Like seriously, I'm not just saying that because I want you guys to think I have some chill life where I do things that make me seem 'quirky.' I really do have So weird that I still haven't photographed a single crown for FTBH! I guess I'm seriously behind in documenting my outfits... I spent the past two weekends either working out or actually having fun. EFFIN BIZARRE, I don't do "fun." My idea of fun is Adobe Photoshop not lagging while it generates a high resolution composite.
