DO THE POLKA

I know I wear this Ralph Lauren blouse too frequently, but its pastel rainbow color scheme makes NOT pairing it with equally colorful garments impossible! This is a simple, typical look for me for no special occasion - just cruising up and down the boulevard while admiring the sights and sounds of a neon cityscape.

Gold chain necklace - Vanessa Mooney
Polka dot shorts - YES STYLE

Have a happy Monday, people! I'll be by the pool reblogging pictures of sneakers if you need me. Oh yeah, you can follow me on Tumblr for an introduction to another version of myself.

THE MOD LIFE

August is nearly over and I will NEVER get over it. It's like summer just broke up with me after three romantic months of skinny dipping in the sweet moonlight and kissing on a hammock somewhere in the Bahamas. What did I do to deserve getting dumped by my fave season EVER? Trying to alleviate the pain of heartbreak by getting in the fall groove, but we all know Autumn is such a rebound. Ugh. I felt pretty comfortable in this monochrome get-up nonetheless! It was perfect for a transitional summer-fall evening: bold top, cotton skirt, simple flats, statement accessories. Love all the space between my skirt's cropped hemline and leopard loafers. Showin' off them legs before it's too late! And by too late I mean too cold... I die thinking about it.

Mod top - YES.I
Necklace - Chanel
Flower bag - Valentino
Skirt - American Apparel
Leopard flats - PINK & PEPPER

This look was inspired by the mod 60s. High fashion factory girls, city livin', Polaroids, teased hair, art, Camel smokes. Warhol muses. Film. The good shit. I figured a pair of black and white polka dot flats would be best accented by a garment that challenged their roundness. Nothing better suited for the job than a half and half shirt. Reminds me of those black and white cookies they serve at delis in New York. Tres appropriate for an outfit with a retro downtown feel. CUE THE PETULA CLARK, PLEASE. You can join the "I know how to wear flats without looking lazy" club by treating yourself to a pair like mine from Pink and Pepper! The Briana ballet flat in Houndstooth would have also complimented a mod theme like this one. Muah!

SPOT OF TEA

Remember those tea parties we had as kids where we wore satin gloves and flouncy dresses and costume pearls? I do, and I feel like I'm getting dangerously close to picture-perfect-4-year-old territory. But not entirely there, because, HELLO, I'm totally sexy and 4 year olds are never sexy! Right? Oh, yeah. I forgot about Toddlers in Tiaras. So much competition in this world... :-( Anyway, this look is yet another testament to my black and white streak, except a little less Parisian-wannabe and a lot more "American Girl." Dolls rule.

FROM TOP TO BOTTOM:
Hat - Novelty shop
Necklaces - Chanel
Faux fur bolero - YES STYLE
Dress - YES STYLE
Heels - My Hot Shoes
Clutch - St. John

I got this faux fur bolero from Yes Style initially having NO clue how to wear it. It's definitely a party piece, but I knew that it had more potential than the photo on the site suggested. Even the outfit I'm wearing here is obvious -- a formal hat, gown, and gloves are staples for a tea party. But the bolero goes beyond... it looked best when I wore it to my BFF's concert at a gig called Amplyfi a couple months ago. Legit Baby Spice, lemme tell ya. I paired it with a sequin blue top, metallic silver skirt, union jack socks, red Mary Jane heels, and a super high ponytail. Pictorial evidence? At your service, my friends.

(From left to right: Kerli, Jessi Jae Joplin, ME, Lola Blanc -- best friends a gal could have!)
Some might say the outfit was a costume, but I honestly felt most like myself. Playing up other people's personas IS my persona.

MAXI MOUSE

Somethin' bout polka dots screams Minnie Mouse for me... but the length of this sheer dress is hardly mini. I'm giving the iconic mousette a MAXI makeover with one draping dress and two mega mouse-ear frames for my eyes. No fear in layering sheer on sheer, as evidenced by the signature transparent robe around my arms! Feels like I can't go anywhere in the summer without the proper resort attire to authenticate the experience. I wore this particular outfit during my stay-cation at Vdara a few weeks ago. It was a perfect lounge outfit in sandals, but the killer heels really snazzed things up come evening. Love a good outfit change!

FROM TOP TO BOTTOM:
Floppy hat - Nixon, Karmaloop
Sunglasses - 80s Purple
Necklace - Chanel Chain
Chiffon robe - Cobrashop
Dress - Asian iCandy
Boots - Zigi, Karmaloop
Bag - MIU MIU

I got this maxi dress from an awesome website called Asian iCandy along with an embroidered Chinese backpack and a Mongolian dress. I'm sure someone, somewhere will complain about cultural appropriation when I debut them here, but I stand by my conviction that any attempts to sincerely undermine the tendency to otherize non-Western cultures are in good nature. Integration of cross-cultural fashions in the Western media should be encouraged, not shamed; it raises awareness, strengthens partnership, and reduces xenophobia. As always, I advise anyone unconvinced or on the fence to read this incredible post by Madeline about the subject.
