shred white and blue

I know, amazing pun. We all know I'm not a patriot so I supplanted the red for shred. Enter my spankin' new boyfriend jeans and oversize blue flannel from Break Ice Trends. I originally intended to couple these pants with suede heels and a leather clutch purse, but on the way to the shooting location with my photographer I donned a pair of beat up white Keds for comfort. Then I saw my reflection in a mirror passing by and realized this, this walking from one place to the next, is the real subject of my vision as a blogger. The candid moments, not the staged glamour. So here's a real outfit for a real mission.

DISCO SK8R

With silver sequined shorts that resemble the sparkle of an old school disco ball and a backwards studded snapback, no phrase could better describe this look than "DISCO SK8R". It's a look casual enough for the skate park and glam enough for the dance floor. The glittering fabric is in an eye-catcher all around... doesn't matter if you're doing an ollie or a hustle. As long as it's smooth, it's welcome. Sparkling hot pants might not be the most nonchalant of garments in my dresser, but they certainly rank as one of the most comfortable. And with iridescent sneakers, a boxy crop top, and trusted leather jacket, I'm about as ready to rock and roll as the skeleton throwing up devil's fingers on my tee.

If ya lookin' to revamp your wardrobe this season, I gotta recommend the three retailers I'm reppin' hard with this look: Yes Style, for their impressive studded cap selection at wholesale prices, Sheinside, for their trend-conscious garments and shoe selection, and Romwe, for their EVERYTHING, as expected.

BAD TO THE BOW

Bows in my hair, under my jacket, all over my accordion pleat skirt. I'm most certainly bow to the bone. Toss a couple studs and some platform stompers into the mix, boom, I'm lookin pretty bad to boot. Bad in a... good way? I definitely feel like a smitten schoolgirl trying to impress the likes of Joey Ramone and Johnny Thunders. Band dudes PUH-LEASE pay attention to me! I didn't spend fifteen minutes putting my hair up all cute for nothin'.

Me and my sister really got a kick out of having to hop a small fence to take these pics by the Fontainebleu abandoned construction site. There's a whole underworld beneath the unfinished architecture... wish I could explore it but that'd entail tricking a security guard into letting me do a photoshoot among the piles of bricks and heavy machinery. And in this outfit? I look like I'm just begging for trouble. In my dreams.

HERSHEY GRUNGE

I jestingly threw out the title "Hershey Grunge" while editing these outfit photos after I noticed that my American Apparel tee featured two shades of chocolatey brown. Paired with the platform Skechers boots and torn Levis cutoffs, I had myself an aggressive ensemble coated in cocoa. What's a street urchin without a little sugar, anyway? Everyone's gotta sweet tooth, even the greasy-haired garage rockers of 1994 who inspired this low-maintenance look. Much love and many thanks to The Cobrashop, for keepin' the vibes authentically vintage with their tattoo chokers, and to American Apparel, for gifting me this cozy cotton t-shirt (perfect for flexing a muscle).

I will use the remainder of this space to remind all y'all who STILL seem to think that 'soft grunge' is an actual derivative of the anti-fashion, garage rock movement that you are miserably wrong. It is not. If it is fashion, it is not grunge. This outfit I wore here? Not technically grunge. Good attempt in the inspiration department, but not authentically... authentic. Creepers are punk, not grunge. Pastel hair is post-scene, not grunge. Flower crowns are bohemian, not grunge. Spiked chokers and black lipstick are goth, not grunge. Anything with a "follow here for more soft grunge" promo caption on Tumblr is adolescent, desperate, and annoying. NOT GRUNGE. Sorry bout it!

MAGIC Style File: What I Wore

MAGIC offers the most comprehensive collection of fashion brands and buyers under one roof -- with that in mind, the pressure was on to dress in duds that expressed where I fit into the trend horizon this season! Fortunately, I had Kelsi on hand to document three of my looks from the show.

DAY 1: Bohemian Color Block

Vest from Lucca Couture, blouse from Ellison, skirt from Lulu*s, pumps from Irregular Choice

This look was ALL about the shoes. I pulled colors from the pumps' retro print and found garments to match. Thanks so much to Ellison, Lucca Couture, and Irregular Choice for making this dream ensemble a fashion reality!

DAY 2: Sportpunk

Tank from Lovemarks, shorts from Lucca Couture, sneakers from Keds

With all the athletic influence on and off the runway these past few months, I felt obligated (in a good way) to illustrate how functional and chic the theme can be. A pair of perforated, elasticized shorts allot the ensemble some distinctly sporty edge and the Keds affirm that comfort is in my list of priorities for a busy day on the fashion floor. But the rhinestone encrusted tank top proves that a comfortable outfit doesn't mean glitz and glam are off the table. Thanks to Lovemarks, Lucca Couture, and Keds for the swag!

DAY 2 1/2: Eastern Wild Streak

Kimono from Darling, shorts from Lucca Couture, boots from Sheinside

Typical me, I opted for an outfit change before an afternoon discussion panel about blogger-brand relationships! I wanted to show our audience that any collaboration with any retailer can work if a blogger has aesthetic flexibility: my transition from rock n' roll sportswear to funky leopard and blossom print made that philosophy physically evident. Thanks to Darling for the gorgeous waterfall kimono!

SKULL CREEPER

No matter how hot it gets in the summertime, I can't resist the classic appeal of a leather jacket paired with an industrial, studded garment like the skirt I'm wearing here. A friend handed it down to me a couple years ago and it's never let me down -- the silver buckles and A-line flare make for a statement silhouette with some signature Hot Topic edge. Of course I chose an even flashier piece to pair with it: this silver button-up gives the mall goth look a dose of glam. And the grungy knit beanie brings it all back down to earth!

The clear show-stopper in this outfit (and origin of the title) is THEM SHOES!!!!! What's that thing people say? Wa-wa-wee-wa? Definitely applies to these kickin' creepers with SKULL EMBELLISHED CROSS STRAPS. Argh. It's like the insatiable maximalist within me is on DMT right now, finally understanding its place in this divine world. So much going on and I have absolutely NO complaints: badass platform, metallic hardware, a peek of laces, and sideways zipper for maximum functionality. EUREKA. I have found it. METALLICAT

More predatory print for me! I got double the cheetah on my dress and heels... maybe my outfit choices are trying to tell me something about my subconscious desires? My guess is that is has something to do Cheetos and Josie and the Pussycats. Yep. Thought you had me fooled, huh brain? No hard feelings, though. I totally agree -- a nu-millenium movie marathon complete with a feast of cheese-powdered corn snacks sounds like PARADISE. I wore this catty get-up to the mall with my best buds, Tyler and Rach (who also happens to be my sister). We're big fans of Jamba Juice, Panda Express, and the general ambiance of the food court. Think we're kidding? Ask any of the employees at Crazy Wraps... they see us there, every Friday night, lounging for hours under the sweet glow of halogen lighting overhead. Remind me to see if there's a fan page for food courts that I can 'like' on FB. Or two. or three. Or all five hundred and ninety-six.

Spiked headband - OASAP
Cat-eye sunglasses - 80s Purple
Red lip - RETROFUTURIST, Lime Crime
Necklaces - THIS IS TRANSITION, Rings & Tings
Leather jacket - Diesel
Fringe vest - YES STYLE
Leopard dress - OASAP
Bullet wrist cuff - MADLADY
Mixed metal charm bracelet - VANESSA MOONEY
Bando Liera Miu Miu bag - Bergdorf Goodman
Leopard pumps - PINK & PEPPER

My body-hugging leopard dress is from Oasap, a site with a price range and inventory similar to Romwe. For a $23 staple item with a MILLION layering possibilities, this dress is a  pretty sick deal. I might even try it over a pair of leather leggings, or even tucked into a high-waisted circle skirt! GEE I'm feeling light-headed already. Clothes... they'll do that to ya.

Now for my favorite part -- addressing the shimmering beacons of SHOE PERFECTION on my feet. These leopard print pumps are the product of design genius. Compliments to the chef - Pink and Pepper! I like to imagine that the creative team behind their brand looks something like The Avengers, except SUPER fashionable and a lot less buff. (Less time at the gym lifting weights, more time at the factory sketching shoes, please!) They *literally* struck gold when they invented the concept for this shoe -- animal print swathed in glitter and mounted on a platform. I would even go so far as to say that those platforms aren't actually platforms... they're mini-thrones to honor the ROYALTY that is the pump itself. SHOEZ. I would bow down to you, but I can't bring myself to take you off my feet! Hope you understand XOXO. The shoes aren't officially for sale online yet, but you can browse the rest of the kick-ass collection on DSW here
