I was never on any sports leagues growing up and usually sat out of group activities in gym class, preferring to take a zero than one for the team. But for that I consider myself an athlete. See, I'm an olympian loner. I train all year for tournaments that no one knows exist because they don't. And I always come in first place. Isolation, solitude, withdrawal, social indifference... they're not games so much as they are tests of strength. They measure all the same qualities a traditional sport would: willpower, determination, passion, and for all intents and purposes cooperation - because who's to say the Self is one agent and not many working for and against each other at the same time? I don't need teammates to prove that I can make compromises or set up a winning play. For that I have states of mind; sovereign and nebulous, simultaneous and independent. In most cases I don't even play for the same team during the same competition... I play for both, all three, every and none at all. No hoops or hurdles necessary, no bridles, no bats, no balls. Only a court -- the one I inevitably take with me, that inevitably takes me with it. I don't really have a choice when it comes to participation. My only goal is to come out a champion -- by not ever coming out at all.

NET FORCE

Have you noticed that sporting knockoff versions of designer logos is even trendier than sporting the original logo this season? I found this imitation Céline sweatshirt - with the C substituted for an S - on Yes Style, and figured that the graphic was a well-executed representation of the most prevailing fast fashion trend this year. 2013 (and late 2012, too) loves a good graphic parody. It's clever. It's eye-catching. It's exempt from copyright infringement laws. It appropriates the prevalence of the original logo's look and creates competition out of it. Irony! Imitation! Postmodern juxtaposition!! Fashion is sooo crazy and meta these days!!!! Maybe I'll start wearing black head to toe next week. All this aesthetic analysis is hurting my brain... I just want to lay in my bed wearing sweat pants and NOT THINK for once. Maybe. 

Imitation logo aside, this sweatshirt features cut-out sleeves which are ideal for layering with unexpected textures like mesh. I knew I'd need some sort of black netting to pair underneath the sweater as soon as I realized my arms would be exposed. My next must-have: real mesh. Jersey mesh. More athletic than cybergoth. And "fitness friendly". My shorts are another seasonal staple: quilted leather is a classic design with futuristic appeal. Love the way they paired with suede wedges and minimal accessories. One chain this time -- I'm getting good at the whole 'less is more' mantra.

SPACE ROYALTY

One of the coolest things I learned in elementary school art class is that purple signifies royalty. I'm not wearing a crown (although I'd argue that this spiked snapback is like a swagged out princess version of a tiara) but there's something nonetheless... commanding about my look today. I guess that lush indigo hue has me on my high horse. Paired with a galaxy print bomber jacket and straight up chrome disco pants, I've got an insanely future space vibe going and I doubt I'll ever be able to top it. NOT. I've got many a trick up these galaxy print sleeves. Expect no less from a bitch whose kingdom doesn't even reign from this passe solar system.

I've owned this Romwe cage collar for a solid six months and it STILL gives me butterflies when I put it on. Something about a crisp, black and white harness with symmetrical straps really does it to me... maybe I'm just in love with the fact that it serves no purpose at all. I debuted it for the first time over a black and white geometric print top at Skrillex's birthday party a couple months ago (lol, first FTBH name drop? I hope someone's counting). And I paired it with a leatherette bodice shift dress last week. Safe to say the cage collar is my 2013 secret weapon.

I know galaxy print is played out to the max and I think that's why I've been so into it lately. It's become too easy to hate on... an inside joke among the fast fashion lot. Mocking the print is a clever way for trend biters to poke fun at fads they bought into last season and in doing so exact a distance between their current style and the trends they abandoned out of commercial necessity. But making fun of galaxy print doesn't make you better than galaxy print. Chances are, you're wearing another print right now that's just as trendy, but not yet "over." Give me your space duds. I shall do them cosmic justice my friend.

SPIKE IT

Pretty sure a "spike" has something to do with volleyball (cue me resenting that I took gym class for granted in high school,  just like every other diva who pretended sneakers and perforated running shorts weren't cool but now realize that athleticism is All The Rage) buuuuut I'm more familiar with spikes of the DECORATION variety. Little pointy things that make my cross sweater even cooler and more tactile. Don't hug me too hard. Paired with my trusted sweat/slacks from Yes Style and rhinestone-encrusted sneaker wedges from Boohoo. Only thing better than a platform kick is a platform kick that glitters in the light. ;-)

I brought it with me to LA three weeks ago and by the time I made it home, the edges of the pockets were all worn away, even though it was brand spankin' new the night before I left. There's no such thing as partying too hard. Just enough or not at all.

CROSS YOUR FINGERS

Blonde and goth... this is new to me. What I love about having short hair is NEVER having to curl it overnight. Gone are my days of sponge rollers. I love how slick and efficient the blown-out side part looks. Even under a beanie, it's easy to manage. And during a windy photoshoot like this one, the rogue flyaways don't give me as much trouble as they used to. Or maybe they do, and I'm just so happy with having blonde locks that I don't care about a few strands getting stuck to my glossy mouth. #Bloggerproblems????

Romwe really brings it hard with their winterwear selection. Though not the warmest choices, I layered a grungy, cross-print sweater with a skull design silk bomber jacket. It's an obvious pairing for a gal who swears by baggy knits and satin. And the simple shorts fill in the spaces in between -- they'll certainly command a presence this spring and summer when it's warm enough to pair them with cropped tees and bandeaus. For now, they look perfect with opaque tights and ankle boots. I could get used to this!

I'LL TRY ANYTHING ONCE

American Eagle's iconic motto "live your life" reminded me of another motto The Strokes introduced me to back in the days of my adolescent wonder years. "I'll try anything once" is a fitting title for a YOLO outfit because the underlying sartorial theme of it all is calculated carelessness. I'm in my spankin' new hidden wedges and ready to walk whatever distance it takes to get to the coolest destination. My baseball tee is classic and comfortable, an American Eagle staple style. It pairs well with athletic shorts fastened from faux-leather and a snapback that affords the look a throwback nonchalance signature to grunge icons from an era that defined our youth. I tossed my plaid robe over the outfit to tie in the gray tones. I may not care about consequences, but I do value a bit of cohesiveness in my color scheme... all gray, all day. CHILLNESS. TRY IT. ONCE.

I put together this outfit for the Lookbook x AMERICAN EAGLE collab. Before selecting my garments from the online inventory, I watched a few of the vids about the models' lifestyle brands. I was inspired by their fearlessness and fervor. Their thirst for adventure was only matched by their indifference to the risk of losing it all. I tried to channel that BRING IT ON vibe with mellow tones, a sporty silhouette, and a diet coke on the go. Life's too short to dwell on the details.
