Soooooo who else is watching Cosmos with NDGT on the science channel this season? My natural elitist inclination is to inform you that I've been a fan of both Neil and the 1970s original series since before the internet made it "a thing." I remember wearing my favorite Carl Sagan t-shirt on the first day of 10th grade -- under one of his most famous portraits (crossing his arms in a maroon turtleneck and standing in front of a turquoise galaxy) were the words "LEGENDS NEVER DIE" in big block letters. I wonder if Carl would have been disappointed in me for accessorizing his face to make friends. Anyway, my only criticism of the new series is that its presentation of what should be challenging material seems pretty "lowest common denominator." What can't be fairly described to a scientifically illiterate audience shouldn't really be 'described' at all... it should instead be presented as poetry since an aesthetic understanding is all the audience will ultimately derive. I think Carl was great at this, allowing the phenomena of science to be humbly aesthetic when purveyed by a "civilian". The new series seems a little more pretentious, but I think that has more to do with the special effects than with Neil. I used to watch his astronomy lectures on DVD as a teen and am obsessed with his sense of humor... I wish more of his unrehearsed personality showed through. Hopefully as the season progresses, the presentation of heady concepts will become more humorous and lighthearted.

Oh yeah, I SOBBED at the end of the debut episode when NDGT recounted meeting Carl for the first time as a seventeen year old. Stories about passing the torch down always get me.

RAINBOW LUXE

I originally planned to wear this outfit on my 20th birthday in May, but since my mom made reservations at a swanky steakhouse, I chose to sport an outfit a little less ostentatious -- a modest Givenchy shirt dress and leather pants. This ensemble is quite the opposite: unapologetically glamorous, marinated in fluorescing pastels, and accessorized with all my (hopefully) head-turning signatures.

I hope that between now and the next time I choose to wear this dress I find a pair of more functional white shoes. I used to have a pair of platform wedges that were comfortable enough to wear for long distances. But I pretty much destroyed them on a rainy night in San Francisco... it's happened with all my favorite suede shoes. These pointed pumps are just as cute but not as practical unfortunately... I don't think I could hit up a festival in heels. Definitely not ambitious enough to try it out. So I'm on the hunt for chunky white shoes. Preferably ones with a major platform. If you have any ideas, share them please!! ^-^

SOLAR FREEZE

Making cosmic waves again in galaxy print... this time around I've got a jacket to match my leggings! I can't get enough of the matching set trend. When a top and bottom complement each other not just visually but thematically, the look immediately elevates from smart to genius. Not that I think of myself as a sartorial genius or anything... but the swirling galactic prints on my top and bottom are lookin' pretty brilliant. Especially once highlighted and accessorized by a bold cap in royal purple and subtle metallic neck cuff. The patterns are futuristic and other-worldly... extraterrestrial... heavenly in their cosmic way. But the outfit is fundamentally inspired by a familiar urban concept. Snapback, t-shirt and hoodie, leggings, sneaker wedges.

A word about Three Dots, the brand that designed my top -- many of you have expressed concern with supporting brands and retailers that outsource jobs and engage in unethical labor practices. I share your moral unease, and want to introduce you to Three Dots, an American made company, for that reason. Their labor policies are ethical and qualities exceptional. This top is the softest in my wardrobe! And graphically the coolest, too... who could resist a pastel wave raglan tee?

SPACE ROYALTY

One of the coolest things I learned in elementary school art class is that purple signifies royalty. I'm not wearing a crown (although I'd argue that this spiked snapback is like a swagged out princess version of a tiara) but there's something nonetheless... commanding about my look today. I guess that lush indigo hue has me on my high horse. Paired with a galaxy print bomber jacket and straight up chrome disco pants, I've got an insanely future space vibe going and I doubt I'll ever be able to top it. NOT. I've got many a trick up these galaxy print sleeves. Expect no less from a bitch whose kingdom doesn't even reign from this passe solar system.

I've owned this Romwe cage collar for a solid six months and it STILL gives me butterflies when I put it on. Something about a crisp, black and white harness with symmetrical straps really does it to me... maybe I'm just in love with the fact that it serves no purpose at all. I debuted it for the first time over a black and white geometric print top at Skrillex's birthday party a couple months ago (lol, first FTBH name drop? I hope someone's counting). And I paired it with a leatherette bodice shift dress last week. Safe to say the cage collar is my 2013 secret weapon.

I know galaxy print is played out to the max and I think that's why I've been so into it lately. It's become too easy to hate on... an inside joke among the fast fashion lot. Mocking the print is a clever way for trend biters to poke fun at fads they bought into last season and in doing so exact a distance between their current style and the trends they abandoned out of commercial necessity. But making fun of galaxy print doesn't make you better than galaxy print. Chances are, you're wearing another print right now that's just as trendy, but not yet "over." Give me your space duds. I shall do them cosmic justice my friend.

GALAXY SQUARED

So, sometimes this funny but also weird thing happens when you're shopping on a wholesale website -- you buy an item with a logo screen printed on it, you have no idea where the logo comes from and neither does the retailer from whom you purchased the garment, you wear it out and someone recognizes the logo and gets excited thinking you're "in" on it, whatever it is, but you're not, you just bought the frickin' shirt because it LOOKS COOL, and then you have to explain where your shirt comes from and "oh that's really awesome how you know what the graphic means!" but internally "GOD I FEEL REALLY PRETENTIOUS WEARING THIS RIGHT NOW." I'm going on this dumb rant because it actually happened to me, wearing this galaxy print sweater I found on OASAP. "Rotting Out" just seems like an extremely.. Tumblrwave design... especially when superimposed over space print. But, no, actually it's the name of a hardcore band I don't listen to. So I have three options here: 1) listen to Rotting Out (the band) and continue wearing the sweater, 2) don't listen to Rotting Out and don't wear the sweater, 3) don't listen to Rotting Out and continue wearing the sweater and risk someone discovering that I am branding with an artist I don't even like. Or maybe I could listen to Rotting Out and never wear the sweater because I respect the DIY scene enough to buy merch straight from the artists themselves. THESE ARE CHOICES.

With the turtleneck, I think this outfit has a cheerleader-esque vibe. But since I'm donning pants and not pleats, it's a cheerleader vibe of the male variety, which I do NOT see as often as I'd like. Male cheerleaders are tight as shit. Let's cool it with the heteronormative masculinity standards for five minutes and encourage our dude friends to get in touch with their sassy, theatrical sides. RA RA: not just for teen girls.

One more thing: GALAXY PRINT IN 2013???? I'M SO LATE I'M EARLY. PIONEER OF POST-IRONY RIGHT HERE, FOLKS. THANK YOU AND NO AUTOGRAPHS PLEASE.
