Before Lagerfeld's iconic SS14 collection starring technicolor smock dresses and art supplies-as-accessories, few fashionistas would have equated the primary kitsch of printed paint palettes with couture as quality as Chanel (well, except for a brazen few of us). "High art" became en vogue all over again this past year, and with festivals like exclusive Art Basel replacing inclusive Coachella, it won't be long before that culture, too, is subsumed by mainstream attention and interest. Jk that is definitely already happening and I'm modestly pretending to live under a rock.
A year ago, I probably would have resented the Chanel collection for "appropriating" from an aesthetic that suggests liberation from currency. But this year, I hate "art culture." I revel in its aesthetic appropriation, its commercial flattening, its manipulation through association with new signifiers. I want it gone, or at least reduced to apparel where it can go out of style again. It is a culture of legitimizing institutions (schools, agencies, galleries), appraisal of beauty with paper and plastic, possession and materialism, distance from humility. It isn't something to defend or preserve. It's something to translate into commodities: obsolescence.
Surely I am the only person alive paying sartorial homage to 'high art' because it feels like a passive aggressive goodbye.

Happy 2015, friends!!!!! I'm gaining my momentum back... one season at a time.

One probably wouldn't expect to pair a tropical print varsity jacket with garments as preppy as these knit shorts and minimalist blouse. The jacket looks distinctly sporty, which is probably why I chose to pair it with anything but a pair of sweats and sneaker wedges. I love the juxtaposition of vibrant vacation prints with subtle staples that afford it sophistication and glamour -- makes me feel like I'm fun and serious AKA taking fun seriously.
These Pink & Pepper peeptoe heels with a cut-outs and laces are NO JOKE. They're that one coworker who makes everyone else look lazy and unmotivated in comparison... in other words, all business. But unlike your brown nosing office mate, these heels actually know how to play. They might even order a margarita at Chipotle on lunch break... but would NEVER tell a soul. Pink & Pepper gets it right per usual.
If you're more in the mood for leggings... Romwe is offering a promotion on their striped zebra leggings through the 24th of April! They're offering 10% off with the code 10%offleggings and if it helps, I even have pair myself. Will debut them this week! ^_^

I warned you that I'd soon go BUCK WILD with the baroque prints! Here I am in a gold, camel, and rose ensemble that incorporates the metallic opulence of rococo and subtleties of muted tones like champagne and nude. My mom bought me this blazer (which I admit reminds me of an especially posh pair of drapes) for my 19th birthday. It's taken me waaay too long to debut it here in a look! I've also used it in an editorial photoshoot I styled for Desert Fish, a fashion magazine from Dubai. So much potential... this outfit is just one 'royal' interpretation. It also feels a bit flirtatious. Hence the name - Rocoquette. *Bats an eyelash as I readjust my tiara*
FROM TOP TO BOTTOM:
Beret - Yes Style
Medallion necklace - Oscar De La Renta
Blazer - Lafayette from Neiman Marcus
Metallic top - Cache
"Tribal Beach Shorts" - Asian iCandy
Clutch bag - Marc Jacobs
Wedges - Jeffrey Campbell
I originally intended to wear a DIY crown fastened from paper, glitter, and mod podge with this outfit, but somehow it disappeared from my bedroom a few days after the glue finished drying! I'm super bummed about it even though it only took two seconds to make. Was such a creative idea... despite the sparkling mess that ensued. Dry glitter. It'll really do a number on your floor. I'm still shaking gold debris off the clothes it came in contact with! In better news, these shorts. SUPER tight, super cropped, but that doesn't intimidate me at all. Check out the rest of the selection on Asian iCandy's website! I've also styled a transparent polka dot gown from their dress department - you can revisit that post right here. Hope you're enjoying the fashion industry's baroque obsession as much as I am! You only trend once.
