phantasma glory

Somehow this outfit title changed from Phantasmagoria to Phantasmagloria to Phantasma Glory... a kinetic portmanteau and image of itself. Goes on and on and on, like the fractal prints on my Tunnel Vision top. Yes, the look is print crazy. But it has to be to justify a name that simultaneously references kaleidoscopic visions and purple flowers.

I've worn this skirt a ZILLION times, photographed it a zillion more, and have a zillion and one memories of myself rocking it as early as 8th grade. It's sort of a historical clothing article, which makes the outstretched elastic waistband even more tragic. My huge green belt (another vintage keepsake) saves the day every time.

tutti frutti

I'm supposed to be in LA today, doing fun things like 'nodeling' and photographing my friends. But of course everything went wrong when I tried to travel yesterday, I had several panic attacks, and I predictably shut down to avoid the frustration of building a backup plan. I don't understand why the universe hates me with such an unbridled fervor. This has honestly been the most painful, un-fun year of my life. Pure torture the whole way through, and to make matters worse, I'm still waiting for my meds to kick in.

But on a lighter note, I'm wearing lime green overalls and a fruit print crop top I 'nodeled' for Tunnel Vision with The Fabulous Stains a couple months ago (full editorial ~here~). Fond memories are all I have. Memories and crop tops.

afterlifer

I suspect that me wearing this mesh gradient top (c/o Tunnel Vision -- who else is as skilled at curating vintage but Madeline and her team?) borderlines cultural appropriation... but then a part of me cringes at the insinuation that a fractal pattern is uniquely a sacred social signifier and not a shared mathematical property that white people, save for ironic paisley bandannas, have yet to insult with their vulgar tendency to conflate with unrelated tropes in cop-out postmodern theatrics.

*camera pans to reveal the lower half of my outfit* Considering my historically accurate entitlement to pair the shirt's almost objectively religious print with the irreverence of paint-splattered sweatpants (in this context playing the starring role of 1980s art-is-dead revival bravado), I am everything that I hate and criticize in this world.

But! But! But no -- no buts. No rationalizing. I am an accurate portrait of fashion's reckless spiral into disrespect for Aura. Let's face it, the tremendous obligation to honor something special interferes with corporate culture's trajectory towards cashing in on Everything Ever.

Surely someone will appreciate me... the pretentious dixie cup genie of blogspot.

FLORAL MAJESTY

I felt like a seriously swagged out ballerina in this look -- a magenta skirt as poofy as a tutu paired with a lilac vintage blouse from the boos at Tunnel Vision (my favorite online retailer for *legit* vintage apparel sourced from the best thrift stores in America). Snapback was obvious. I hardly leave the house without one. I've been in this dependent condition for about nine months and so far I have NO interest in curing the addiction. As for the boots - I used to be addicted to those, too. About a year ago. Then I kinda stopped wearing platforms because I was more interested in sneaker wedges. Nowadays I'm more open to the idea of variety and less to the idea of sartorial commitment. It's kinda like I have a polyamorous relationship with shoes.

It took me F O R E V E R to finally will myself to wearing this outfit (and photograph it). Not because I was too embarrassed to be seen in public wearing something "gaudy" (um, hello, self-proclaimed and proud outcast over here) but because I felt like no occasion would ever be good enough to honor with a match as trill as this one. But after enough deliberation I realized that any event is as good as you make it. And as long as you're surrounded by fun company, the event's 'glamour' (or lack thereof) doesn't really matter.

ON THE PROWL

It's kind of gross how unapologetically "diva" this outfit is. The Carrie Bradshaw curls and beret, oversized sunglasses, and baroque satin, leopard print, and fuchsia suede triple threat are almost too much. No, actually, this print crazy hodgepodge is genuinely "too much". Fortunately we here at FTBH Corp. don't respect socially constructed fashion boundaries and take much pleasure out of crossing lines conventional style referees label off limits. And we do it in literal stride - one platform pump in front of the other. "We" being me, myself, and I, of course. Even fiercely independent girls need a posse!

Cap - An old standby
Oversize cat-eye sunglasses - RETRO CITY
Vintage satin jacket - TUNNEL VISION
"Leopard leisure suit" - NATURAL COLOUR
Fuchsia pumps - Pink & Pepper
Bag - Rebecca Minkoff

Only four people deserve my love today. Brit and Madeline, the rock n' roll amazons behind Tunnel Vision, and "Pink" and "Pepper", the BFF cartoon chicks who represent the shoe company they're named after. Even though they're only illustrations (don't discriminate - even drawings can dress top-notch) they're somehow WAY more stylish than me in all their two-dimensional glory. I'm thanking the boos behind these brands (or 'vintage stockists' in the case of Tunnel Vision) because not only did they hook me up with some sweet Spring goodies, they pretty much do the entire world a service by offering such rad merch.

MAGIC ROUND UP!

This August, I had the pleasure of attending my third WWD MAGIC summer tradeshow with Two Point Oh! LA. Without a doubt, this convention experience trumped all others. Discovering new brands, communicating with retailers, and sharing your industry perspective with an interactive audience is always a thrill – but when those moments are enjoyed in the presence of friends, new and old, they sublimate into memories so powerful that it’d defy reason to forget why the fashion community is such an incredible, creative force. It was a genuine privilege to have been invited to MAGIC as a digital influencer, representing the American fashion blogging community and bestowed the impressive responsibility of generating coverage throughout a medium bloggers know best: the internet. Between meeting an inspirational lot of women as empowered as they are stylish and introducing myself in the flesh to retailers like Pink and Pepper or Lucca Couture(with whom I’d only previously connected online!), I learned. Some girls expressed their concerns with blogger-brand relationships and others offered solutions. Some girls campaigned for their favorite fashion-forward social networking sites like Pinterest and Tumblr. Some girls, like me, encouraged others to get involved in the community by starting somewhere obvious, like Lookbook.nu. No matter what the topic of discussion was, knowledge ricocheted off the walls of the Convention Center and landed deep within the crevices of our inventive brains. Anyone who argues that the fashion industry is superficial and dry has clearly never attended MAGIC. Never in my life have I been surrounded by more brilliant businessmen and women in my life than in those three days. I extend my deepest and sincerest acclaims to the Two Point Oh! LA team and WWD MAGIC staff for making this adventure possible. And I’d like to especially offer everlasting gratitude to my –and the girls’ – “blogger Mama,” Kelsi Smith, who coordinated this ENTIRE collaboration. You are all so indescribably fated to be appreciated!

In the spirit of fond memories, here’s a collage of my MAGIC experience, as documented through Instagram.

TEAL MY SUNSHINE

I wore this bohemian ensemble on my last day at the MAGIC tradeshow here in Vegas! Definitely wanted to go out with the bang, so the quilted turquoise jacket from online vintage mecca Tunnel Vision was an obvious choice. Couldn't walk two feet without a stranger noting its fine construction and vivid color scheme! Not every day you see a jacket as well-made as this one. Though its cropped and padded silhouette is traditionally 80s, I worked it into a free-spirited theme. Beautifully accentuated the turquoise stones in my headpiece!

The chain around my hair comes from an incredible Etsy shop called Funny People Co. They specialize in all that handmade, bohemian good stuff: slave bracelets, turbans, headpieces and draping necklaces in brush gold and bronze. Check 'em out if you're in need (or better: in want) of some staple summer jewelry to compliment your hippie streak. My boots are from Pink & Pepper and, despite the heel, were PERFECT walking shoes for a busy day at the Convention Center. I actually got to meet the Pink & Pepper team at FN Platform, the shoe show at MAGIC. It was surreal -- their booth was stocked with boots, sandals, heels, and flats of every shape and texture conceivable (that's a LOT of shapes and textures if your imagination is as overactive as mine!) We went wild snappin' iPhone photos in what looked like a MASSIVE Carrie-Bradshaw-status closet, but with the spunk and sass of a teenage girl. It's always a blast meeting the brains behind a brand you're passionate about! I'll show you some pics of our MAGIC meetup as soon as they're posted. In the meantime, check out my boots on Bonton here!
