FLAME AND STUD

Some years ago, I knew a guy who took crazy photos and made t-shirts and hated everything (including me eventually) but was nonetheless quietly inspiring... I've always been tempted to hate him back but to this day feel reluctantly endeared to his poetic cynicism. Love, hate, same difference. The point is, he designed this t-shirt which my friend letter shredded and passed off to me. Its lasted me many a wild eve... which might be why it's now almost completely held together by safety pins. Sometimes life distresses your own clothes for you. I paired the huge tee with a tiny Meemee vest and cropped jacket from Wendybox. Throw some reflective lenses and flannel into the equation and you've got A Look. The "Flame and Stud."

Since this is my first of many posts featuring Daily Look, an innovative online retailer with whom I'll be regularly collaborating, I want to give them a special salute and officially welcome them into "my world." Or maybe I should be officially welcoming myself into THEIR world?? I'm down for that, too... heaven is living in a virtual loft somewhere between a series of trendy stock photos. Anyway, forget my non-sequitur retail fantasies for a minute and check out their inventory if you're in the shopping/browsing mood.

My flames cap is from Gypsy Warrior, another hot brand that's spoiled me with treasure... particularly of the faux fur and leopard print variety. Can't wait to show you what else is in store for the month! X

TROPICAMO

What you’re seeing right here right now is my Ultimate Look. Pairing watercolor floral print with silver spandex is possibly the greatest sartorial decision I have ever made in my petty career as a fashion blogger. You call it egotism, I call it pride. This is my craft. Tropical patterns, transparent sunglasses, and metallic motifs are my craft. Hot pink Louboutin clutches and cotton slacks are my craft. Matching the soft green of my blazer to the vivid succulents of my landscape is my craft. The aesthetic marriage of lounge, botanica, and modernity is my craft. RESPECT the “craft” – it’s “art” plus two consonants.

FROM TOP TO BOTTOM:
Sunglasses – Vintage
Cuff necklace – OASAP
Turtleneck – Boohoo
Tropical blazer – VIVILLI
Hot pink clutch - Louboutin
Slacks – YES STYLE
Silver sandals – Chicnova

Camo isn’t limited to a green and brown blend of foresty brush tones… everything is technically camo if the relationship between the outfit and context reflects at least marginal similarity. If you’re in a gallery wearing an all-white tuxedo, you’re in camo. If you’re in a parking garage wearing an industrial gray sweatsuit, you’re in camo. If you’re in the snack aisle at Ralph’s wearing a NASCAR jacket sponsored by Nabisco, you’re in camo. I’m in my valet zone wearing “plant print” – I’m in camo. Sweat these silver platform sandals from Chicnova.

SHAKA

In December, I coordinated a full turquoise look for my debut night in LA when I attended PacSun's "Common Threads" event. It was a wild evening -- Snoop Dogg, open bar, photobooth, and a reunion with my friends Bethany, Peter, Olivia, and Adam from Lookbook. I don't even think I slept that night, opting instead for a warehouse party and eventually breakfast (delirious, and at the crack of dawn) at Fred 62. By the next morning, my suede turquoise wedges were hopelessly tarnished by pools of mud and rain through which I had apparently trudged en route from event to cab to party to cab again. So, reluctantly, I resigned those shoes to a box of other wearable keepsakes that symbolize the genesis and finality of phases in my life marked by sartorial signatures. Turquoise did me well in 2012. Initiated many friendships, undermined ones that weren't worth nurturing, and gave the internet yet another reason not to take me seriously... jokes. Not going to retire my penchant for blue in 2013. Gonna take it to other levels.

FROM TOP TO BOTTOM:
Beanie - DIY
Turquoise blouse - 9 CROW STREET
Fur coat - Secondhand
Tropical pants - OASAP
Spiked heels - BOOHOO
Bag - Rebecca Minkoff

I remember the night this cyan cap from the 99 cent store became my staple "SHAKA beanie" instead... I was looking down at its dazzling hue wondering how to make it even more ""branded."" That's when the turquoise puff paint came out. Some of you have asked "why #shaka?" and since I"m exhausted explaining THAT dated cultural prophecy, I'll just forward you to this tweet and leave things there. Mysteriously.

My vintage top is from 9 Crow Street -- still my jam for hand-picked secondhand pieces thrifted in Ireland and for sale worldwide! Ya can check out three collages I made inspired by their stock a few months ago. The floral pants are an absolute MUST (as in, you physically require them) for anyone who dares self-identify as a 'tropicunt' (me, three months ago, but you know... I still #respect). I'm wearing spiked heels from Boohoo instead of my aqua wedges in this look -- and I love them both equally. The spikes and oxford platelet give the ensemble a hard edge with uptown sophistication. It works for an outfit that's otherwise overflowing with motif excess: rhinestone bindis, gold chains, foliage print and faux fur. You can really seriously always expect me to "go there."

Renaissance Deux.

Long time, no blog. I've never in the history of FTBH gone on a hiatus that lasted as long as this one -- it's been nearly one month since I've updated! I'd apologize for leaving you hanging, but maybe I'd be flattering myself by assuming you were waiting for my return at all... heh. ;)

The truth is, I completely lost touch with my own world these past two months. My priorities as a blogger, writer, curator, and individual fell to the detriments of a "romantic narrative" in which I became unhealthily invested. I was so dazzled by somebody else's personal universe that I belittled my own into a cognitive oblivion. I stopped blogging, lulled communication with my friends to an irreparable standstill, and let my manic delusions of worth - and more often, worthlessness - erode my reality into a deprecated pulp, one that I am still working to mold back into a tenable habitat. I do not yet know harmony, but I recognize that picking back up the familiar pieces - like my blog, my photography, and my community online - is one of many cornerstones in the healing process. I want to be better.

I never really "believed" in love until recently, and even still, I am cautiously tethered to the contention that it's a socially constructed phenomenon meant to pacify people, to distract them from the perils of a mechanized, industrial world, and to reinforce the American Dream cliche. The 'feeling' that is love is dangerously real, but its assumed necessity is definitely not. I learned that the hard way.

Clearly not versed in the language of romance, I believed that the ultimate overture of love was "ego suicide.” I slowly killed off parts of myself to prove to my partner that I was willing to make any sacrifice necessary to improve our relationship because, intuitively, I knew it was doomed to fail. Yes, the nuances of healthy coping mechanisms are lost on me. But body language, vocal inflections, social behaviors and word choices are not at all – it was too easy for me to tell that there was a discrepancy in devotion therein my relationship. My error was in not having rationally done something about these impulses early on. I tolerated them all and punished myself, believing that I was at fault for my partner’s waning interest. There is nothing that I could have done about that – there is nothing anybody can do to reignite the singed wick that is an indifferent lover. But there are many ways to survive an impending heartbreak that will not weather your personhood as severely as mine have these past couple months. I was unfortunately too late to learn them before I had my own heart broken.

The unrequited love canon is not new to me. In fact, what happened in January reminds me of a pedantic line in a sonnet I wrote when I was 15: “I do fear my maieutic speak has pestered you for days / but how else will I know that length has not yet killed the spark?” Translation: I recognize that me constantly needing reaffirmation that you love me is annoying, but since we’re in a long distance relationship, I need to hear it to make sure that you’re not over me yet. Advice for anyone in a similar position, or easing into a new relationship and feeling intuitively skeptical – seriously consider the relevancy of this quote right now: “Never make someone a priority when all you are to them is an option.” If that is the case, do not lie to yourself about the reparations you feel ‘capable’ of making. Your partner has issues that they need to deal with independently of a romantic context. They may still have feelings for someone else. They may not share your passion. They may not be sexually attracted to you, emotionally attracted to you, mentally attracted to you. They may not feel attractive. Trying to solve these conflicts by throwing yourself even more earnestly into your partner’s arms will not solve anything. It is a toxic threat to your sense of self. It is suicide.

No relationship is worth figuratively killing yourself to save. In fact, my willingness to ‘choke’ may have ultimately been what drove my partner to severance – he recognized that I would die for him, and maintaining the status quo would have made him accessory my own ego murder. He wouldn’t change for me. I would. I did. One week later, I still feel grotesquely out of body. This humming vessel is not my own – it is weak, sensitive, humiliated and humiliating. It is a permanent reminder that I am something I never thought I’d become, or thought I’d have been all along… passionate. I care too much. I love fatally.

I want to say that I don’t know what it is that made my ex fall out of love with me. But I do know – it was my naïve persistence that he was ever in love with me in the first place. I loved him honestly and entirely and instantly because I am (can’t believe I’m saying this!) irrational. Yup. I am irrational. I am a manic, awestruck, saccharine sucker for love. He might be, too. But not with me, not that quickly, and not given our unfortunate circumstances. I was in love with him, and I was alone, and I sensed that solitude every time we were together. I thought that immersing myself more completely in his world, his domestic mold, his industry, and his being would serve as a noble and romantic testament to my affection. Maybe that insanity is romantic at the core… but to him, it was even more a reason to exact distance. It destroyed us. And because I became “us,” it destroyed me in the process.

Love is yin and yang. Its capacity to devastate is as powerful as its capacity to save. I could easily escape the torment of having to miss my ex, to grieve his absence, to hopelessly crave his warmth and embrace by simply “switching off.” But if I did, I’d likewise sacrifice any hope of ever again experiencing the breathless elation his courtship brought me only a few months ago. I love that sensation too much to indefinitely give up. I guess, all in all, I love love. And the greatest, truest, most romantic ever way to prove it is to survive. I will not kill myself for love. I will live for it. Faithfully every day.

Today I open a new page, start a new chapter, turn over a new leaf, and a hundred and one other foolish platitudes that are as true as tried… this is my ‘spiritual renaissance.’ Beyond survival, my excellence depends on defining myself independently of one other person. So we’ll start small. We’ll start here:

Hello everyone. It’s nice to meet you again.

TROPIGOTH

PARENTS FORCING YOU TO GO ON A “FUN” FAMILY VACATION TO BARBADOS BUT YOU’RE LIKE “UGH STOP TRYING TO GET ME EXCITED ABOUT SOME DUMB MARGARITA WITH AN UMBRELLA IN IT, CLEARLY I AM DEPRESSED BECAUSE MY BOYFRIEND SAYS HE WANTS SPACE”???? Have no fear, tropical wear also comes in BLACK to assuage your dark energy! You can be goth AND totally vacation appropriate. No one’s gonna throw you off the cruise ship in these Fiji pants from Motel Rocks. They’ve got all the sass of a Hibiscus lei but with the sensible depth of a tortured poet writing free verse in a Starbucks.

FROM TOP TO BOTTOM:
Spiked snapback - ROMWE
Leather sleeved jacket - BOOHOO
Pants – Motel Rocks
Shoes – TUSC BOUTIQUE

As badly as I’d like to go full force with the tropical theme, you can’t SERIOUSLY expect me to evict black from my wardrobe. There’s GONNA be days this winter when I’m like “no, if I wear the rainbow galaxy leisure suit people might think I’m inviting conversation.” Sometimes you just wanna wear something that keeps passersby at a safe distance. Like layers of spikes from literally head to toe.

Before I go, just want to make EXTRA sure that you're paying EXTRA attention to my spankin new pair of studded boots. Tusc Boutique treated me to these guys and I've been in a spiked-leather-induced bliss for the past couple weeks. Every single person reading this needs to invest in a pair of military boots. The amount of time you save NOT lamenting over the fact that you don't own a pair of kicks that match ANY ensemble pays for itself. Ya. BTW - Tusc Boutique sells WAY more than shoes! Like this:

Shred It Up Sweater, Rojas Bajas Denim Shorts, Two-Tone Leggings

Hope ya <3 them as much as I do! MUAH!

STEEL CARNATION

I solemnly swear that EVENTUALLY I will stop talking about my new hair which isn't even new anymore... today is not that day. I can't help but draw a comparison between the subtle sheen of my severe side part and the glossy metallic of my Goodnight Macaroon blazer, decorated in a delicate gray carnation print. The color scheme (or lack thereof) is industrial and cold, but compensated for by the flirtatious blouse bow hanging from my neck. I kept consistent with the futuristic business casual theme and slipped into a pair of iridescent purple/silver Pink and Pepper loafers and dress pants, also from Goodnight Macaroon! Check out their site right here for more sleek styles.

FROM TOP TO BOTTOM:

Sunglasses - 80s Purple
Metallic mandarin blazer - GOODNIGHT MACAROON
"Venetian Concierto Blouse" - Sugarlips
Tapered trousers - GOODNIGHT MACAROON
Leather clutch - DOCTOR COUTURE
Iridescent loafers - Pink and Pepper

My friend Michael Shirley, the it-boy mastermind behind Doctor Couture and Mic, gifted me this leather bag in 2011 and I've since used it every day to store my necessities. Instead of individually transferring all my possessions from purse to purse when I need a new bag to match an ensemble, I grab my clutch and toss it in. I don't know how I survived before this clutch entered my life... and now I'm wondering how I didn't think to simply carry the bag on it's own without placing it inside a larger tote! It looks divine in my hands, or tucked efficiently under one arm. So it's a bag within a bag, and sometimes just a bag. Mucho love and infinite THANKS to Michael for hooking me up with what it is sincerely the most practical gift I have ever received. ^-^

SPIKE IT

Pretty sure a "spike" has something to do with volleyball (cue me resenting that I took gym class for granted in high school,  just like every other diva who pretended sneakers and perforated running shorts weren't cool but now realize that athleticism is All The Rage) buuuuut I'm more familiar with spikes of the DECORATION variety. Little pointy things that make my cross sweater even cooler and more tactile. Don't hug me too hard. Paired with my trusted sweat/slacks from Yes Style and rhinestone-encrusted sneaker wedges from Boohoo. Only thing better than a platform kick is a platform kick that glitters in the light. ;-)

FROM TOP TO BOTTOM:

Chain - Forever 21
Cross sweater - ROMWE
Slacks - YES STYLE
Backpack - YES STYLE
Sneaker wedges - BOOHOO

It's gonna be a painfully long while before you see a hat on my head that isn't a beanie or snapback. And this bag is not going ANYWHERE except over my shoulders. I brought it with me to LA three weeks ago and by the time I made it home, the edges of the pockets were all worn away, even though it was brand spankin' new the night before I left. There's no such thing as partying too hard. Just enough or not at all.
